My invention relates to improvements in hand power pulling machines, for use in stretching wire, stump pulling and all other similar kinds of work.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above-mentioned character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 denotes the frame of the machine comprising parallel side members 6 and disposed between the side members at one end is adrum '7, rotatably mounted on the shaft 8 having eccentric stub axles 9 at each and, journaled in the ends of the side members 6. A worm gear 10 is journaled on the shaft 8 and is fixedly secured to one flange of the drum 7 by screws 11. The worm gear 10 is adapted to mesh with the worm 12, secured on the vertical shaft 13, by the key 14, and the vertical shaft is journaled in upper and lower bearing blocks and 16, secured in place by transverse bolts 17, extending between the side members 6 of the frame. The bolts 17, together with the bolts 18 hold the side members of the frame in proper spaced relation. The vertical shaft 13 extends above the upper bearing block 15, the upper extremity of the shaft being square, as at 19, to receive the ratchet handle 20. The handle 20 is provided with a ratchet wheel 21 having a square bore to receive the square end 19 or the shaft 13 and a pawl 22 carried by the handle and held in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet wheel, by the spring 23, causes rotation of the ratchet wheel in one direction upon oscillation of the handle. A hand knob 24 for turning the handle 20 is detachably attached to the outer end of the handle and is connected to the handle by the plunger 25 slidably mounted in the knob, which is normally held in engagement with the aperture 28 in the handle by the tension of the spring 2'2. Upon lifting the plunger 25, the knob 24 may be removed from the end of the handle and an extension handle, not shown, may be attached to the handle 20, to increase the leverage.
A crank 28 is attached to one of the stub axles 9, by the pin 29, for turning the shaft 8, to move the gear 10 into and out of mesh with the worm 12 and mounted in the crank is a pivoted latch lever 30 having a pin 31 adapted to engage openings 32 formed in the side member 6 of the frame to secure the crank in its set position, the pin being normally held in engagement with the openings by the spring 33 which bears upon the latch lever. A collar 34 is threaded on the bushing 35 of the gear 10 having a groove 36 in its inner face to receive the end of the cable 37, to be wound v on the drum, which passes through the openings in the flange of the drum and gear, as at 38, and upon tightening the collar, the end of the cable is securely clamped between the collar and gear. The periphery of the collar is provided with openings 39, to receive a suitable wrench for tightening the collar. A guard plate 40 extends around the periphery of the gearlO having its ends attached to the upper and lower bearing blocks 15 and 16 and is rigidly supported by brace bars 41 extending between the plate and side member of the frame. The opposite ends of the side members 6 of the frame, are off-set inwardly, as at 42, and clamped between their extremities a two piece swivel block 43, secured to the side members by bolts 44. A swivel bolt 45 is mounted in the swivel block 43 and is connected with a grab hook 46, by the link 4'7.
In operation, it will be seen that upon turning the handle 2c, the worm 12 will cause the worm gear 10 to revolve, thereby rotating the drum 7, to wind the cable 37 thereon. When it is desired to unwind the cable from the drum, the latch lever 30 is released and the crank 28 turned, which rotates the shaft 8, moving the gear 10 out-of mesh with theworrn, so that the drum is free to rotate.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that certain changes in the shape, size and ar gear wheeL'a ratchet handle for operating said vertical shaft, a cable adapted to be wound on said drum having its end passing through an opening in the end of the drum and said gear wheel, a collar adjustably mounted on the bushing of said gear wheel, for clamping the end of said cable between the collar and gear wheel, a crank for turning said eccentric shaft to move said gear wheel into and out of mesh with said worm; and a latch for securing said crank in its adjusted position.
