IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE-FENCE SUPPORTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,501, dated J une 26, 1877 application filed June 9, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN R. GORBY, of Hiramsburg, in the county of Noble and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Portable-Fence Supporters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, makingapart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my combined fence-post and base, and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view thereof.

This invention has relation to improve ments in posts and bases for portable fences.

The object of my invention is to improve this class of fences by first providing a proper mode of attachment of the uprights to the base secondly, by connecting the upright posts upon each side of the fence, at the ends of the panels, and at their upper ends, by an inclined water-shed, which will protect the end of the rails from the effects of moisture; and, thirdly, to devise a base that, while readily detachable from the ground, will adequately support the fence and sustain it against all ordinary strain.

The nature of myinvention will be fully set forth in the following description and in the claims appended thereto.

In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the base of my improved fence-post, consisting of a metallic disk, a, of suitable thickness, provided upon its edges diametrically opposite each other with tapering drivespikes b, of suitable length, breadth, and thickness, according to the tenacity of the soil.

It is evident that in light sandy or loamy soils, these spikes should be of greater length and width than in heavy clay land. These spikes are in a plane at right angles to the length of the panel, and their breadth in a plane parallel thereto; consequently, they are well adapted for preventing the posts secured thereto from being upset, while at the same time they are readily removable from the ground by an upward movement.

0 indicates a diametrical rib formed on the upper face of disk (1, and e two parallel grooves formed in said disk at the side of said rib, and at right angles to a plane passing vertically through spikes b aforesaid.

The disk, the drive-spikes, and the grooves at the base of the rib c are all turned out in one piece, and the base, of which these elements are parts, is made of cast or malleable iron.

The grooves e aforesaid receive the lower ends of the uprights B B snugly, as shown in Fig. 2, but they are additionally secured to the base by means of strong pins f, that are driven through registering perforations in the said uprights and in the rib. The up-. per ends of the uprights are connected by a strong board, 0, that, being inclined, will shed Water and prevent injury to the ends of the rails included between the uprights. These latter being rigidly connected at top,

and strongly pinned to and sea-ted in the base,

are to all intents and purposes as strong as though solid, while they are much lighter and more economical. They need only be detached from .the bottom rib c to be disconnected from the base. The longitudinal rails D of the panel are interposed between the uprights B B, and are maintained. at a proper distance apart by spacing and supporting blocks D.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The metallic base for the posts of portable fences, consisting of the disk a, the drivespikes b, the rib 0, and the grooves e at the base thereof, specified.

2. The combination with the base A, having drive-spikes b and a raised transverse rib, c, of the side posts or uprights B B, bolted to said rib, and the beveled water-shed G, substantially as specified.
