3 (Claims My invention relates to heat exchangers aims to provide it novel arrangement of parallel tubes havine return semi connections and with clean-out openings such that the number of clean-out openings need not be greater then the number of tubes while each of the tubes may be inspected and cleaned.
The novel features of my invention are pointed out in the appended claims. In order, however, that my invention, together with the objects and advantages thereof may best be understood, 1 will now describe in detail, in connection with the accompanying drawing, two forms oi an peretus in accordance with my invention selected, way of example from a number of possible iigi 'e Iragmentery elevation in see exchanger within .iiy in o heat exchangers such, f as econoniizers for heating feed-water oilers tube stills for petroleum oil, it is or desirable that e tubule: unit for eyin the fiuicl to be heated shall have cleenopenings permitting access to the interiors of the tubular elements or pipe lengths of the units.
In the ordinary arrangement, there on, twice many clean-out openings as there are straight tuhe lengths. Such an arrangement requires an unnecessary amount of labor in breaking and re r king the numerous joints. It has been proto reduce the number of openings its one-heif by using forged return bends cl -out openings at the ends exten hentls. proposed, ho ever, the M el v ng straight for the U1 unit he,

Serial No, 822,933:
iler return bends to connect the other ends of the two units in the sold pair to the units lying on each side thereof so that the flow of fluid within the units posses therethru in series. The individual elements 20A of given units 16A and are connected together at both ends by integrally forged couplings 42. The couplings 42, however, serve merely as bifurcations of the throats 24A so that the fluid passes thru both the elements 20A of o given unit we in parallel. it will he note'ol, however, thot the throat 2% out one end! of a given unit is offset from the center of the coupling 42 from which it extends so as to lie suhstcntielly in alignment with one of the elements 202i of such unit. The throat 24 i the other end 0" fen unit is the 013326- ciir ci o oi the coupling 42 tends so as to lie sulostentieily 11th the other element son of the oats 24A permit it View of the en-= tire inner surface element 261%. for cleaning entl inspection. it will be seen, therefore, that by removing the return sends to the elements can be readily cleaned, one-half thru the throats at one side of the econoniizer and one-half thru the throats the other side.
Whut 1 claim is:
l. in o heat exchanger, o plurality of units each having two parallel pipe lengths united at both ends oi the unit into common throats, the throat at one end of e, given unit arranged to permit inspection oi suhstentioiiy the entire inner surface of one oi seicl lengths and the throat at the other end Ed. said given unit arranged to permit inspection of substantially the entire inner 5 re of the other of said lengths, return bends arranged t connectstiic tin'cets for series flow oi units the t d for cleaning inspect eizchor e? d Ooh in an
