Patented Aug. 1933 I v N William Walter Sm'ouft, Rhylpwales Application septemb ry iza 1932; [Serial No. a 634,499, and in Great Britain April so, 1932 5 Claims. (climb- 42) This invention concerns improvements in or relating to pens, and has particular reference to fountain pens. Inconveniences frequently businessmen and others due. to the lack of blotting paper with which to blot writing on cheques and so forth, and it is the primaryobject of this invention to provide. means whereby. this inconveniencdmay .be obviated.
Referring to' the drawing:- i Figure 1' is a part longitudinal sectional elevation of a fountain pen having this inventionap-'- plied thereto.
Figure 2is a perspective view of the same' with the top cap removed. v
In the construction illustrated the blotting roller 8 is pivotally mounted upon a. spindle 11, the reduced ends 12 of this spindle engaging in apertures in the parallel arms 13 of a substantially f U shaped frame.
The frame is pivotally mounted upon a rivet 14 secured in aligned holes in the connecting or base portion 15 of the frame, and a projecting arm 16 of a supporting bracket 17 secured to The bracket 17 is attached'to the cap 2 by means of an integral projection 18' inserted through an aperture in the end of the cap and riveted over on the inside, the arm 16 extending parallel to the axis of the cap.
The yoke is provided with a further upstanding arm 19 disposed diametrically opposite to the arm 16, and whilst this arm has no direct connection to the roller or to the supporting frame I therefor it serves to locate the roller and prevent the latter moving out of alignment with the axis of the pen except any movement around the pivot 14 when it is desired to use the roller.
In this construction operation of the device is simplified since the interference with the opera tion of the roller by parts of the supporting structure therefor is reduced to a minimum, and the blotting roller may be used in a number of posi s tions with respect to the axis of the pen as will be apparent from the perspective view shown in Figure 2. v
,The operation of removing or renewing the blotting roller is greatly facilitated since it is only necessary to distort one of the arms 13 out of engagement with the reduced end 12 of the spindle 11, the roller together with the spindlebeing then free to leave the frame. Anew roller can 1 then be positioned upon the spindle and can be inserted in the frame by passing through the experienced by v l v slightly springy material, or the armsare formed witha certain amount of rigidity or spring so steps in the opposite sequence'to that described above. I
,1 In order to erationthe frame is preferably constructed of that "when, distorted out of the normalposition to remove the rollerandthe spindle the arms of theffraine move back into their original positions when the distorting force is removed.
The pivotal connection between theframe 15 and the-ar'ml16 of thesupportin yoke'is pref- "erably made fairly stiff in'operation so that when moved into the normal position as shown in Figure 1 theroller tends to'retain its position against more'or less horizontal position.
facilitatetheabove described opthe actionof gravity when the pen is held in a When it is desired 'to use the roller it is only" necessaryto press the outer projecting end lightlyinto contact with the surface to be blotted when theroller moves .about therivet14 into the position shown, in Figure 2.
The blotting roller may if desired be provided with an inner sleeve or liner-9 of metalto form a bearing for the spindle 11.
WhatIclaim thenisz- 1. In combination a cap for a fountain pen, a blotting roller, a carrier member for said blotting roller, said carrier comprising a frame of U shape, pivots in the arms of said U shapedfframe,
said blotting roller being rotatably mounted in." .said pivots, a supporting bracket for said carrier member, an arm on said supporting bracket extending parallel to the axis of the cap, a pivot at the projecting endof said arm, said carrier member being rotatable on said pivot about an axis at right angles to the axis of the :blotting roller, and a secondary cap adapted to fit removably on said fountain pen cap andto enclosefsaid;
blotting roller, carrier and. supporting bracket. 9,5
2. In combination a cap for a fountain pen,'a
blotter roller, a carrier member for said blotting roller, said carrier comprising a frame of U shape, pivots in the arm of said U shaped frame,
said blotting roller being rotatably mounted in said pivots, asupporting bracket for said car rier, anarm on said bracket extending parallel to the axis of the cap, a pivot pin at the projecting .end of said arm, said pivot pin engagingthe base of said U shaped frame so that the carrier member is rotatable about'an axis at right angles to the axis of said blotting. roller, and a'secondary cap adapted to fit removably on said foun-a tain pen'cap and to enclose said blotting roller, carrierandsuppOrting bracket.
