UNITEE STATES P EEIGE.
FREDRICK PENTLARGE AND PHILIPP HIRSOH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, i ASSIGNORS TO SAID PENTLARGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENT-BUNGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,386, dated June 26,1877 application led June 4, 1877.
To all whom 'it may concern: Be it known that we, FREDEICK PENT LARGE and PHILIPP HIRscH, both of Brook lyn, New York, have invented an Improvementin VentBungs, of which the following is a specification:
Our improvement relates to the manufacture of vent-bungs; ai d our invention consists in boring an ordinary wooden bung from both sides, -so as to leave a web of wood across the interior portion ofthe bung, which can be broken or pushed out, when a vent is required, without removing the bung from the cask in which it is inserted.
Bungs have heretofore been made with a hole bored from one side only, leaving a, web of wood ush with the opposite side of the bung, and the cavity thus formed has been filled with a plug. By our invention we dispense with the necessity for-using a plug, and We locate the web of wood i 1 the portion of the bung where the web will perform the most ei'ective service in contributing strength to the structure.
The accompanying drawings are as follows:
Figure l is a top view of the bung, and Fig. 2 is a section through the line ma; on Fig. l.
It will be seen that an ordinary tapering bung, A, has a cavity, B, formed in its outer face, a, and another cavity, O, formed in its inner face, a. A portion of the material of which the bung is composed isr left intact, and forms the web D.`-
To facilitate the removal of the web D when a vent is required, theinner recess, C, may be made larger than the other recess, B.
We claim as our invention- 1. The transverse web D in a bung having recesses formed, respectively, upon its inner and outer faces.
z. In a vent-bung, substantially such as de-` scribed, the recess 'C on one side of the bung of greatersize than the recess B oirthe other side of the bung, substantially assdescribed.
