IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,287, dated June 19, 1877 application filed April 14, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OHN T. ROUNDTREE, 0t Martinsville, in the county of Harrison and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Portable Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my improved fence. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail side View of one of the panels.

This invention has relation to improvements in portable fences.

The object of my invention is to devise means for expeditiously connecting the ends of the panels, and for disconnecting the same as readily.

The nature of my invention will be fully understood from the following description In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A A indicate the panels of a zigzag or worm fence, that are each composed of spaced horizontal bars, poles, or rails B and vertical transverse bars, poles, or rails C O, suitably secured together. At one end of each panel the rails B extend out some distance beyond the upright O, forming a number of projecting ends, a, the remaining end of the said panels being terminated by the other end upright 0, as shown in Fig. 1. D indicates a latch-bar, that is pivoted, at b, to the lowest of the horizontal rails of the panel at its extended end a, and is capable of being vibrated into a position where its length and that of said rail will be in line with each other.

The extended ends a of the rails of one panel are passed inside of the end upright G,

. between the rails B of the adjacent panel A until the upright 0 comes in contact with the said rails. The latch-bar is then swung up into a vertical position, and its upper end detachably secured to the extension at of the upper horizontal rail of the panel by means of a pin or bolt, 0. By this means the extended ends a. of the one panel are prevented from escaping from between the rails of the other, and the two panels may then be adjusted at any angle to each other, according to the form of the lot sought to be inclosed.

The panels, being set up as above described, are prevented from endwise displacement by means of a second pin, 01, that is passed through one of the longitudinal rails of the panel, preferably the middle one, at that portion thereof that is included between the latchbar D and the end rail or bar 0 aforesaid. In practice the other upright O of each panel will extend some distance below the lower horizontal rail, this extension (lettered e in the drawings) being designed as a means for securing the panel in position by being driven or buried in the ground.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a portable fence, the combination, with the panel A, com posed of spaced rails B and uprights G U, of the panel A, having extensions to on one end, and an upright, C, and the latchbar D, pivoted to the lowest extension of the panel, and adapted to bethrown up into a vertical position across the remaining extensions, and to be secured thereto by a pin, sub-- stantially as specified.

2. The combination, with the panel A, constructed as described, a panel, A, having extensions beyond its endupright G, and a pivoted lock-bar, D, coupling the said panels, of a pin, (1, extending through a rail, B, of panel A, between the upright G of panel A and the said lock-bar D, substantially as specified.
