Description

D. N. ROOT. COUPLINGS on WELL-AUGER SHAFTS. 1
No. 192,084. 7 Patented June 19,1877.
INVENTEH? N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAFNER, WASHINGTON, D C.
"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DATUS N. ROOT, OF P ARKERSBURG, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO 0. F. HODGES,
- OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COUPLINGS FOR WELL-AUGER S HAI TS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. l92,04, dated June 19, 1877 application filed December 7, 1876.
How, of
useful Improvements in Coupling for Well- Auger Shafts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a coupling for well-anger shafting, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, which fully illustrates my invention, A and B represent two sections of the shafting used with well-angers.
0 represents the coupling made in the form of a hollow rectangaular box of any suitable dimensions. The upper end of the section A is inserted in the lower end of the coupling or box 0, and bolted, riveted, or otherwise permanently fastened therein. Near the upper end of the box 0, on one side, are two ears, or a, between which a lever, D, is pivoted. This lever hangs downward, and has a flat steel key, G, pivoted to it at a suitable distance from the top, the outer end of said key being forked, and the lever fits therein and is pivoted between the prongs thereof.
The key G passes through aslot or mortise into the interior of the box or coupling 0, and enters a square notch, 12, made in one side of the lower end of the shaft section B. This movement of the key is caused by pressing in the county of Butler and State 'of Iowa, have invented certain new, and
the lever D close to the side of the box, when its lower end, that has a shoulder, a, will slip past a spring, d, and said spring catching on the shoulder will lock the lever and key in place.
The spring (1 is attached to a projection, f, at the lower end of the coupling.
To uncouple the shafting, it is only necesi sary to press down the spring 11, when the lever can be drawn outward, Withdrawing the key from the notch b in the section B.
At the upper end of the coupling is a perforated projection, E, for attaching the boisting rope or chain.
This coupling is simple, cheap, and durable, and not liable to get out of order, and it saves trouble, time, and expense as compared with the ordinary pin-couplings, which continually are getting bent, broken, or lost;
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The rectangular box or coupling G, provided with the hinged lever D, pivoted key G, and spring 01, in combination with the shaft SBOtlOlVA, secured permanently in the coupling, and the shaft-section B, provided with the notch 11, and fastened by the key, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of November, 1876.
DATUS NELSON ROOT.
