Description

' useful Improvement in Apparatus for Drying fected by clamping the's'trip of wood between UNITED STATES PATENT Or-Front PHILIPP PFEFFER, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE W. READ, OF
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN WOOD-DRYING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 192,00 l, dated June 12, 1877; application filed May 14,
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, PHILIP]? PFEFFER, of New York, N. Y., have invented a new and Wood, of which the following is a specification: I f
My invention relates to animprovement in that class of wood drying or bending apparatus, in which the drying or bending is efheated press-plates. provided with vents for the escape of moisture, the object of my invention being to construct a simple and effective device of this class.
' This object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved device, and Fig. 2 a trans verse section of the same.
press-plates, which are strengthened by internal partitions a and posts I), and have openings d for the admission of steam.
In the working-face of each plate-that is, in the face which bears upon the wood which is being operated uponI form grooves e, the latter, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, extending directly across the face of the plate in a transverse direction.
This exact arrangement of grooves is not essential, however,l but may be modified in various ways--for instance, by the use of communicating-grooves, running both longitudinally and transverse1y,or running diagonally.
It is essential, however, in carrying out my invention that the grooves shall discharge at the edge of the working-face, as by this arrangement the vaporized moisture is afforded an opportunity of passing off directly and rapidly.
The press-plates, moreover, are cheap, owing to the fact that the grooves are formed entirely in the face, which is readily accessible,'thus allowing the grooves to be formed with rapidity and precision.
The plates are preferably grooved, so that when applied to thestrip of wood the grooves of one plate occupy a position midway, or thereabout, between the grooves of the opposite plate, in order to act more uniformly on the wood than it arranged directly opposite each other.
I claim as my invention- A press-plate, the working-face of which is provided with grooves, which extend to the edges of said working-face, so as to form passages for the discharge of the vaporized moist ure from the wood.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, PHILIPP PFEFFER.
