This invention relates to a copper base alloy, particularly to an alloy which has good electrical conductivity, high strength and hardness.
. This application is a division of my prior application Serial Number 641,041, filed No vember 3, 1932.
I have found that by adding cadmium in amount from approximately 0.01% to 2% to a copper base alloy containing approximately from 0.01% to 3.5% silicon, 1.0% to zinc, 0.01% to 3.5% manganese and balance copper, the cadmium materially increases the strength and hardness without materially decreasing the electrical conductivity. Also the addition of aluminum up to a certain amount increases the deoxidation and im-,
proves the hot working qualities as well as increasing the hardness and toughness. The aluminum may be added in amount from 0.01% to approximately 6.0%. minum tends to decrease the electrical con.- ductivity, if the alloy is to be used for elec- 5 trical purposes the amount of aluminum added would not ordinarily go over 0.5%, but for some of. the mechanical uses it mightgo as high as 6%.
This improved alloy has high tensile strength which is increased when hard drawn' into wire, and it also has hardness, toughness and high electrical conductivity. Having thus set forth the nature invention, what I claim is:
copper base alloy comprising approximately 1.0% to 15% zinc, 0.10% to 3.5% silicon, 0.10% to 3.5% manganese, 0.10% to 2.0% cadmium, 0.10% to 6% aluminum, and balance copper.
