Description

W. C. HIERING July 18, 1933.
HAND BAG Filed Aug. 13, 1951 Patented July 18, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM C. HIERING, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO J'. E. MERGOT T 7 COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE HAND BAG Application filed August 13,1931. Serial No. 556,731.
This invention relates to handbags, and more particularly to devices to enable such bags to be conveniently and safely carried.
The usual handba for ladies is provided with a'strap or suitable handle by means of which the bag may beswung at the side of the user. This manner of carrying" handbags has been found objectionable in that the bag hanging at the side'of the user is capable of being easily manipulated by pickpockets without attracting attentlon. Also, it has been found inconvenient and uncomfortable to carry. As a result, women generally carrysuch bags by grasping an end of the bag with the palm of the hand and holding the between the body and the arm. When carried in such a manner, it is obvious that the strap is superfluous.
Another popular expedient is the provision of a band having its ends attached to a side of the bag so that a hand may be inserted between the bag and the band. While this type of bag may be conveniently carried, the acidity of users hands in constantly grasping the metal frame, results in tarnishing of the latter, such frames usually I sing gold plated or silver plated. Obviously, tarnishing of the frame affects the appearance of the bag, since such bags are designed for ornamentation as well as utility.
In U. S. Patent No. 1,815,912, issued to me on July 28, 1981, is disclosed an expedient comprising a ring member swivelly connected to a handbag or handbag frame, the
'ring member receiving the thumb of a person while the bag is held between the body and arm. While the structure described in the above mentioned patent facilitates the carrying of ahandbag, it has been found that the stud upon which the ring is swivelled becomesloose and insecure, and may be drawn from the bag frame or the bag by exterting a qu1ck erking force. ()bvlously,
' such a structure does not insure the safe carrying of a handbag against the operations of purse Snatchers, as a quick jerk will disconnect the bag from the stud and leave the person holding only the stud and the ring swivelled thereon.
a flat elongated head It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a ring swivelled on a stud which is attached to a handbag frame in a manner so that it can not be readily disconnected from the frame without enabling a handbag to be safely carried against the operations of purse Snatchers.
A further object is the provision of a swivelly mounted ring which may be attached to a handbag frame more easily and Securely than has been heretofore possible. I
These and other advantageous objects. which will later-appear, are accomplished by the simple and practicalconstruction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which J Figure 1 is a view showing the device at tached to the frame of a handbag.
Figure 2 is asectional view showing details of the device and the manner in which it is attached to the frame.
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the stud used in the device.
In Figure 1 is shown a handbag having a well known type of channelled frame member 4, the channel of the frame member opening inwardly. The top 5 of the frame member has a hole loosely receiving a stud 6. i i
The stud 6is cylindrical in shape and has 7 the width of which is slightly greater than the diameter of the stud and the hole in the top 5. In assembling the device the stud is inserted in the hole in the top 5 of the frame and projects above the top 5, the upward movement of the stud being limited by the head 7, which engages the inner surface of the top 5, and lies between the side walls 8, 9 of the channel, but not necessarily engaging the side walls.
A sleeve 10 is rotatably mounted on the stud 6, which passes through and has a reduced portion 11 projecting above the sleeve, 9
the latter contacting the top 5 of the frame member. A washer 12 is placed over the portion 11, and the portion 11 is then spread or upset to provide a head 13 to securely hold the parts together, at the same time using a tool, thus enable free rotation of the sleeve on the stud.
The sleeve 10 also has a passage 14:, transverse to the stud, which passage provides sockets receiving the reduced ends 15 of a split ring161 The cross sectional diameter ofthe ring 16 increases gradually from the free ends 15 to the center section 17 and the inward movement'of'the ends 15 in the passage 14 is limited by shoulders 18.
From the above description it is obvious 5 that the device may be easily assembled and attached to. a frame member; the'sleeve, stud and frame member being secured together by; the single operation of spreading or upsetting the reduced portion 11 of the stud to provide 'the head 13, which is above the frame member and easily accessible. It is obvious that'the head 7 prevents disconnection of the'stud and frame member, for the head cannot be pulled through the hole in top '5, as is the case when force is applied to the device disclosed in patent No. 1,815,912, in which the studis held to the frame member by brads.
Also, it should be noted that the making of the transverse passage 14 clear through the sleeve is a simpler operation than formin sockets on each side of the sleeve as hereto ore has been the practice. i
7 While the stud 6 has been above described as having. a reduced portion 11 receivinga Washer 12, it is obvious that the reduced portion and the washer may be omitted and the head 13 formed in direct engagement with sleeve 10, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modifications Without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claim.
Iiaving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a handbag, a frame member having a hole therein, a stud loosely positioned in the hole, said stud having a fiat elongated head of greater length than the sleeve thereby limiting its movement in one direction through the hole, a sleeve having a transverse passage, rotatably mounted on the stud and engaging the frame member, said stud having a reduced portion projecting beyond the sleeve, a washer on the reduced portion of the stud and engaging the sleeve, said. reduced portion bein upset to securely hold the parts together, and a split ring having its free ends pivotally positioned in the passage of the sleeve.
