REUBEN E. HOOK, OF LEWISTOWN, EENNEYLVANIA SHINGLE CUTTER Application inea {Apr-n a,
in shingle material of asphalt may be placed in position for the cutting thereof into determined sizes, the cutter being` supplied with or carrying scale markings to enable the accurate determining of the size of the shingle to be cut, the cutter being of novel form and is hand operable.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a. cutter of this character, wherein the cutting blade is mounted in a novel manner so that the swing thereof to cutting position is limited and cooperation with the stationary blades upon the bed or table of the Cutter is assured.
A further object of the invention is Vthe provision of a cutter of this character wherein fences or guides are adjustably arranged so as to enable the proper position of the shingle material for the cutting thereof either straight or at an angle according to the requirements of the work.
A still further object ofthe invention is the provision of a cutter of this character which is extremely simple in construction, readily and easily operated, thoroughly reliable and eiiicient in its purpose, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a top plan view of a cutter constructed in accordance with the invention, a portion thereof being broken away.
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 looking toward the opposite side of the cutter.
Figure 4; is an end elevation.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure l looking toward the opposite end of the critter.
Figure 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 1932. Serial No. 603,189.
of Figure l looking in the direction of the arrows..
Figli re l is a plan View of one of the fences or guides.
8 is a side elevation thereof. 455* igure il is a view similar to Figure 7 of the other fence or guide. i
F 'gure l0 .is a side elevation thereof. gure ll is a disassembled view of the pivot used in the device. i 60 Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the cutter comprises a bed or table l() having the corner legs ll which elevate the work supporting upper face of the table or bedl elevated with regard to a support or foundation. Formed at one side of the tableor bed y is an upstanding bearin or pivot ear l2 hav- 70 ing fixed the n. a pivot bolt i3 supporting a swinging knife lever ist carrying a cutting blade l5 which is inset in this lever to have its outer face flush with the adjacent face of said lever. he lever at the end` remote from /75 its pivotal axis is formed with a handle 16' and also provii'led with a shoulder 17 forming a stop to coact with the bed or table l0 on the lowering of the lever to limit the downwardmovement thereof, the lever at its B0. cutting` edge being adapted to play within a clearance 1S provided in the edge of the bed or table next to said lever.
rlhe bed or table l0 next to the clearance 18 is" formed with a depending hanger 19 carry- 85 ing a stationary blade 20, the latter being inset in said hanger to have the exposed faces of these flush with each other, these bladesL l5 and 520 cooperating with each other on manipulation of the lever lil in the working of the cutter for the severing of asphalt shin- 'lhe lever about its pivotal point is reinforced'at to give strength and rigidit?Y Jthereto.
At right angles to the path of movement of the lever lll and upon the upper' face of the bed or tablelO are spaced parallel scales these functioning for determining with accuracy the size of the shingle to be cut, the shingle being indicated by dotted lines at 23 in Figure lof the drawings. Associ ated with the bed or table l() are guides or felices 24 and 25 respectively, these having pintle lugs 26 for engaging in correspondingly shaped recesses 27 in the bed or table l() so that the guides or felices can be swung angularly and carried by each guide is a clamping bolt 28, the saine working within an arcuate slot 29 in the bed or table l0 and in this fashion the guide or fence can be secured in adjusted position upon the bed or table.
Each guide 24@ and 25 has on its face confronting the work or shingle a scale 30 for measuring purposes.
In Figure 1l, there is shown the pivot 13 which includes a headed bolt having next to its head a squared portion 3l formed about itsshank 32, while the threaded end 33 of this shank is provided with a groove 34 for a nib 35 on a washer 36 and working against this washer is the nut 37, the latter being adjustably engaged on the threaded end 83 of the shank, as will be apparent.
The operation of the cutter should be clearly obvious so that a detailed description thereof has been omitted for the sake of brevity.
Vhat is claimed is:
A cutter of the character described coinprising a table having at one side thereof an upstanding pivot ear, a swinging knife lever pivoted to said ear and having a cutting blade inset in said lever to have its outer face flush with the adjacent face of said lever, a handle forined on the end of the lever remote from its pivotal axis, said lever being provided with a shoulder forming a stop to coact with the table on the lowering of the lever to liniit downward nioveinent thereof, said table beingprovided with a clearance for the p lay of the cutting edge of the blade of said lever, spa-ced parallel scal s indicia disposed at the upper face of the table and at right angles to the cutting blade, fences arranged on the table and each pivoted at its end next to the lever adjacent to a scale indicia, said table being forined with arcuateshaped slots, and clamping boltscarried by the felices and working in arcuate? shaped slots to' secure the fences in adjusted position on the table.
