IMPROVEMENT lN CIGAR-LIGHTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 191,794, dated June 12, 1877; application filed l March 27, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HEZEKIAH P. ANDREWS, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Lighting Cigars; and do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a side view of it as it appears with one side plate of its case removed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 a top view, of the percussion-strip feeder and striker-retractor. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the striker. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the apparatus, taken through and in line with the axis of the tinder-wick carrier.

By means of the said apparatus, not only, on raising the cover of its case, are a tinderwick and a percussion or fulminate strip advanced or fed upward, but a striker is set in operation, the result being the explosion of one of the fulminates and the lighting or setting fire to the tinder-wick, the fire of which, on closing the cover, will be extinguished by such cover.

In the drawings, A denotes the case, formed as shown, and provided at its mouth or open end with a cover, B, hinged to it, such cover beingarrangedso as, when closed, to be immediately over the upper end of a tube, 0, which I term the tinderwick carrier. A wick coiled within the case is to extend up through the said carrier.

Within the case is a curved partition, on, which, arranged as shown, forms a chamber, 0, for receiving a coil or strip of paper, having in it an explosive composition, arranged in small masses or drops of like size,-and disposed at equal distances asunder. This strip (shown at d) is extended upward out of the mouth of the chamber 0, and between a spring or presser, D, arranged in the case in manner as shown, and a fender, E. This fender, formed as represented, extends through the tinder-wick carrier, and is pivoted to the cover B. There projects from the feeder an inclined tooth or series of teeth, F, such being to enable the feeder, on being raised, to seize the tinder-wick and feed it upward. During the descent of the feeder the part F will slip on the wick without moving it. The feeder E has a guide-slot, f, made in it, to receive a stud, g, projecting from the case. Such feeder also has a small triangular catch, h, extending from it, as shown, such being to actuate the striker represented at G. On lifting the cover B the striker will be retracted by the catch until the latter may reach the notch k of the striker. ()n this taking place the elastic power of the striker (such striker being a spring bent and arranged as shown) will force the striker smartly against one of the fulmimates of the strip and explode it. The presser D not only serves to support the strip and press it up to the feeder while the latter may be in the act of advancing the strip, but answers, by its end bearing against the strip, to prevent any retraction of the strip by the feeder during its descent.

On raising the cover the tinder-wick will be advanced in its tube, the strip carrying the drops or masses of fulminate will be fed upward, and the striker will be moved and caused to effect an explosion, the flame of which will .set fire to the upper end of the wick. ()n the cover being closed, it, by shutting down upon the wick, will extinguish the fire thereof.

I do not claim in a pocket lighting device an adjustable tinder and an adjustable percussion-tape, nor an igniting box or case having a hammer capable of operation from the exterior, a wick duct or tube, and means for feeding and exploding a pellet by the action of the hammer, and a wick-feeder.

I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a pocket cigar-lighting device, consisting of the combination, in the case A, of the movable cap or cover B, the tinder-wick carrier 0, the percussion-strip feeder and striker-retractor E, the tinder wick feeder F, and the striker G, all constructed, arranged, and operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
