Description

June 27, 1933. GRAUMMTZ 1,915,990
ARTICLE OF FURNITURE Filed March 24, 1930 ATTCRNEY Patented June 27, 1933 PATENT OFFICE BRUNO GRAUMNITZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ARTICLE OF FURNITURE Application filed March 24, 1930. Serial No. 438,305.
The invention relates to all classes of furniture having drawers, such as dressers, dressing tables, chests of drawers, vanity tables, buffets, servers and desks.
The object of the invention is to apply a new construction to these articles with a View to saving space, material and cost of manufacture through its simplicity.
The above and other objects will become 9 apparent in the description below in which characters of reference refer to like named parts in the drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional plane view of an article of furniture showing my construction thereof.
Figure 2 is a rear elevational View of a chest of drawers.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view of the dresser.
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the construction of the framework of a dresser.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a drawer as mounted upon the frame work of the dresser.
Referring in detail to the drawing, numerals and 11 indicate the front posts of a dresser or chest of drawers. The numerals 12 and 13 indicate the rear ports of the article of furniture. These rear posts 12 and 13 are joined by a plurality of shoulder strips 14, while the front posts 11 and 10 are connected by ledges 15 which are parallel with the shoulder strips 14 at the rear of the article of furniture. Panels 16 and 17 connect front posts 11 and 10 to the rear posts 12 and 13. The shoulder strips 14 serve as a barrier to prevent the passage of drawers, which are supported upon beams 18, the ends of the latter being embedded in recesses formed in the posts. The article of furniture is provided with a cover panel 19 at its upper end, to which the posts 10, 11, 12 and 13 are secured. The shoulder strips are provided with a raised corner 20, which enters into a recess formed longitudinally in the rear wall 24 of the drawer. These drawers have side walls 21 and 22 and a front wall 23 to which handles are attached for pulling the drawers out of the article of furniture when it is desired to use the same.
The invention has for its object the saving of labor and material as well as valuable space in dwellings. Hitherto, all classes of furniture, such as mentioned herein, have been made with a c l osed back and the drawers thereof can only be inserted into the article of furniture to a distance within two to four inches of the back. To eliminate this waste of space, my construction introduces an article of furniture, which is not provided with a back, being of the open skeleton construction, provided with apertures into which the backs 24 of the drawers are fitted. The rails 18 and the shoulder strips 14 are fitted into the four posts and the rails 18 serves as a support for the drawers which may he slid back and forth. In this manner, an article of furniture is provided which presents a complete wall at the rear of the article of furniture when the drawers are all closed.
By providing the shoulders above the strips at the rear of the dresser, a limiting element is formed and the strips 14 are causedto register in the channels 25 when the drawers H are in closed position.
It is to be noted that certain changes in the form and construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. I
I claim:
An article of furniture comprising a frame having four vertical posts and having a plurality of drawers slidable therein, horizontal frame members joining said posts, said horizontal frame members being mounted in tiers the distance between members of which is equal to the height of one of said drawers, said frame being closed on both sides and open at the rear, each of said horizontal frame.
members at the rear of said frame having a Q shoulder rising above the level of its adjacent frame members, said drawers being slidable on said side frame members and having a recess extendingthe width of the drawer on the lower edge of the rear panel of the drawer, said shoulder registering in said recess when the drawer is closed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
BRUNO GRAUMNITZ.
