Patented dame 27, 1933 were STATES PATENT err r ELMEB B. KRUEGER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIG-NOR 7J0 BEACH 3: ARTHUR, INCL, 0F INDIANAFOLIS, INDIANA, A. CGRPORATION WRAPPED PACKAGE Application filed September a, 1931. Serial no. 561,926.
This invention relates to a sanitary package construction.
The chief object of this invention is to package a plurality of like articles economically and in such a manner that they are not only sanitarily sealed, but also they are exposed through a transparent portion of the covering for displaying the ornamentation on the article and the character of the articles.
One feature of the invention consists in the utilization of a cellophane covering for at least the face of the package.
The chief feature of the invention consists in the formation of the covering for the package from a plurality of sheets and from a minimum of material.
Another feature of the invention consists in the particular union of the two sheets forming the cover.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawing and the following description and claim In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a front perspective view of one form of package.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged central sectional view through a portion of the package, showing the covering formation.
Fig. 3 is a back perspective view of another form of package.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged central sectional view of a portion of the modified form of package shown in Fig. 3.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, there-is illustrated a superposed series of nested plates having the bottoms 10, the upwardly and arcuately directed peripheral portion 11 and the rim 12, a continuation thereof. Extending across the front face of the uppermost or outermost article, herein illustrated as a paper .plate having an ornamental design 13 thereon, is a transparent covering 14 which preferably is of cellophane. The front covering 141 is of substantially the same outline as the articles and includes a peripheral This extends rearwardly from the front of the articles and peripherally envelopes the peripheral edges of the articles.
A back covering member 16 includes a portion 17 which herein is shown extending beyond the back covering'portion and portions 15 and 17 are arranged in overlapping relation and are sealed together, without employment of any adheslve, by the use of heat and.
if desired, pressure. The back may or may not be transparent and may or may not be cellophane. Cellophane has the advantage that it is not only transparent but also is relatively waterproof. Likewise, the overlapping edges of the cellophane covering may be readily secured together and without the use of an adhesive. The resultant package, therefore, is a sanitary display of all of the articles in the assembled or packaged relation.
Adhesive sealing may be employed when desired or required and when cellophane is utilized water sealing may be employed.
In Figs. 3 and 4 of the invention, the same type of structure is illustrated, and herein, the articles are indicated by the same numerals, 10, 11 and 12, and are substantially identical to those shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The covering, however, in the present form of the invention includes the transparent front portion 114, the side or edge covering portion 100 and the overlapping portion 115.
The back is indicated by the numeral 116 and the portion 11? thereof constitutes the overlapped portion of said covering. The back covering may be of the same character as the front covering.
In this form of the invention one of the coverings, and herein the front covering 11a, is of greater cross sectional area than the articles and overlaps the back covering. The back covering is herein shown terminating short of the peripheral edge of the articles. In other words, it is of an area slightly less than that of the articles. However, it may be equal to said area or greater than said area; that is, as in the first instance, it may terminate at the edge of the article instead of short thereof, or as shown in Fig. 4 515111213 be extended and may extend upwardly between the edges of the articles and the portion 100. In any one of these instances, however, the front covering terminates on the back face of the rearmost article and overlaps the back cover at the rim portion of said articles. In this form of the invention, the
overlapping portion 115 is folded andsecured to the portion 117 in the same malwr i that portion has been described asbeing secured to portion 17. v
It is to be understood that while in both instances the front covering is shown overlapping the back covering, the overlapping relation may be reversed. Likewise, al? though the articles have all been illustrated as of substantially circular outline, they may A type of flat but circular article, is a doily and the like. In each instance the front covering is of transparent material so that the pattern of or ornamentation on the article will be fully disclosed through the front covering. I
The invention claimed is A package including a plura' posed similar articles, each" 1 atransparent flexible, no the exposed face of an 0 other flexible non-rigid covering for the exposed back of the other outermost article, said coverings being substantially of the same peripheral outline as the articles, one being at least greatervin area than the article, said coverings having an overlapping edge engagement for sealing the included articles therebetween, the rigidity of said articles solely providing the bulk or body of the package, and the coverings closely conforming to the articles to form a package having a perimeter substantially that of the articles-and of a depth substantially that of one article plus the thickness of-the articles.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto afiixed my signature.
