Description
Patented .lune 2Q, 1933 UNIT!) WALTER O. MILLER, GF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY WINDOV Application filed December 24, 1931.
This invention relates to improvements in windows, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby the sash can be easily and quickly taken from the guideways to permit the transparent members of the sash to be cleaned.
This invention also consists in certain other features ot construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be herein-after fully described, illus- :is front part of the casing l lower section trated in the accompanying drawings and specically pointed out in the appended claim.-
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like numerals denote like or corresponding parts throughout th-e several views, and in which Figure l is a front view of the improved window.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.
F ig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the strips.
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view through Fig. 4.
In these drawings, the letter A indicates the window frame, the letter B the lower sash, and the letter C the upper sash.
A casing l is formed at one side of the window frame to receive the weights 2 which are connected to the sashes by the cables 3, it being seen that only one weight is provided for each window sash. The lower end of the is formed separate from the rest of the front oit the casing, as shown at 4, and this part is hinged to the sill as shown at 5, so that by opening this part or section 4, access can be had to the weights.
The usual strips 6 are placed at one side of the frame and the inner and middle strips 7 at the opposite side ot tl window, and arc each vformed with an upper section 7 and a 7, the lower section being removable by having its lower end fitting in a recess 8 in the sill with the upper end ridged as shown at 9, to tit in a corresponding shaped recess 10 in the lower end of the secc tion 7. Thus the section 7 can be moved Serial No. 583,072.
outwardly and then lifted so that it can be removed to permit withdrawal of a sash.
channel shaped member ll has lugs l2 extending inwardly from its limbsfor engaging grooves 13 formed in the sides of end ot the two sections 7 so that this member is slidably supported on the section 7 and by moving it downwardly, it will engage the upper end of the section 7 and thus hold the upper end of the section 7 in position. Of course by raising the member 11, the upper end of the section 7 can be moved outwardly and then lifted out of position.
Ey removing the section 7 of the inner strip 7, the lower sash can be removed and rested on the inner part of the sill so that both sides oi" the transparent member can be cleaned. Then after this lower sash is cleaned, it can be put back in place and raised and then the sash C is lowered and the section 7 ot the middle strip 7 is removed so that this upper sash can be withdrawn and placed on the sill so that its transparent member can be cleaned,
In order to prevent the lower sash B from interfering with the withdrawal of the upper sash C a recess let is formed in the top of the inner wall ot the frame to receive the upper edge of the lower sash as shown in Fig. 2.
I prefer to round the side edges of the sash as shown at 15, to facilitate withdrawal from between the strips and their replacement.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel featuresof the invention will be readily apparent.
lt is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall with-r in the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what .l claim new is ln a window structure, aY sash guiding strip including an upper stationary section` and a lower removable section, the lower end of said upper section having a recess therein and said upper section having longitudinally extending grooves in the sides of its lower part, a substantially U-shaped member having projections on the inner faces of its limbs sllding in the grooves, said grooves extending below the plane of the upper portion of the recess, said lower section having its 5 upper end reduced and itting in the recess, with the U-shaped member holding said re# duced upper part in said recess when said U-shaped member is in lowered position.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature. 1o WALTER O. MILLER.
