My invention relates to locks.v ItY has for its object to provide an improved lock and more particularly, an improved lock of the combination type. A fur- 5 ther object of my invention is to provide such a lock having improved mechanism Operative on a plurality of bolts and controlled by improved Control mechanism. A still further object of my invention is to provide an improved controlling mechanism including a member forming a part of the combination mechanism and both longitudinally and rotatably adjustable into a plurality of control positions relative to the locking means and relative to a protecting means between said positions. These and other objectsl and advantages of my improved construction will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice.

-Referring more particularly to the combination structure operated by the member 6, it will be noted that the latter is in the form of a disc carried onthe outer extremity of a shaft 8. This shaft also has fixed to the inner end thereof, as by a set screw 9 received in a suitable slot 10 in the shaft, a rotatable combination member 11. This in turn has a bevelled inner edge 12 carrying a suitable indication or mark 13 movable relative to asuitable` dial 14 formed on an annular stationary member 15 attached to the exterior of the case by suitable means, as screws 16. Herein, it will also be noted that the portion 12 on the member 11 projects over the member 15. The member 11 is also provided with a reduced portion 17 rotatable in a corresponding aperture inthe member 15, and,
further, carries a plate 18 abutting against.
the inner end of the member 11, which is rotatable in an annular groove in the other face of the plate 15 and attached to the member 11 by suitable means, as screws 19. Thus it will be evident that upon suitable rotation of the member 6, the member 11 may be adjusted so as to bring its mark 13 into any desired relation to the dial 14, while the member 6 may be adjusted longitudinally at will relative to the member 11.

.will be noted that the shaft 8 has a toothed Vmember 20 connected to its inner end in any suitable manner as byy riveting at 21, in such manner as to be both rotatable with thel member 6 and shaft 8 and longitudinally movable therewith when the same are shifted longitudinallyv relative to the member 11. Herein, theinner end of the shaft 8 is also providedwith an axial bore 22 adapted to receive a vpin 23 suitably fixed on the cover 2 and co-operating with the member 11 in .gui-ding the shaft 8 in its longitudinal movement, while the case v1- is also' provided with a portion 24V forming onelimit or abutment for the toothed member 20. Here it will also be observed that when the member rests against this portion 24, its teeth mesh witl corresponding teeth 26 formed on a rack member 27 which carries the bolt 4 at one end and is reciprocable in the case 1 relative to suitable guides 23, while the bolt 4 is guided in the front edge of the case. Thus it will be vevident that in one longitudinal position ot the toothed memb-er 20, rotation of the member 6 in opposite directions will result in projecting or with-drawing the bolt 4.
Cor-operating with this bolt operating mechanism I have herein shown improved dogging mechanism controlling the same which, whilenot required, is desirably used therewith. Here it will be noted that this mechanism is also operable by the member Q0. It assumes the form of a co-operating dog 29 pivoted on a suitable pivot member 30 which is, in turn, attached to the case 1 and disposed in a slot 31 ext-ending longitudinally oit' the member 27 while spaced from the ends of the latter.` As shown, this dog is adapted to be swung about the member 30 from the full line position illustrated in Figure 2, wherein it is in back of the bolt 4 and accordingly prevents inward movement thereof and of the member 27, to the dotted line position shown in that figure, wherein the bolt and member 27 may move inward. Herein, in order to move the dog 29 from the full to the dotted line position, or vice versa,
the dog 29 is also provided near its pivot with a series of teeth 32 disposed in a plane parallel. to the plane of the teeth 26 on the rack member 27 and also adapted to be engaged by the teeth 25 on the member 20. Thus it will be evident that where it is desired to use this dog mechanism, the same may be actuated or released by moving the member 6 longitudinally in such manner as to bringthe teeth of the member 2O into engagement with the teethV 32 and then rotating the member 6 in the proper direction to throw the dog or release the same, with these operations preceding or'following the operations of the bolt 4 previously described.

Herein, it will be noted that the latter is reciprocable through a usual nected at its inner end to a rack member 33 j movable in guides 33 on the case and herein laterally offset from the bolt 5 and connected thereto by a relatively transversely disposed portion 34. Here it will also be noted that this portion 34 carries a pin or rod 35 projecting inwardly inside the rack 33. Moreover, it will be noted that this redis encircled by a suitable coiled spring 36. This spring in turn operates between the portion 34 and a projecting portion 37, on a member hereinafter mentioned, and having an aperture 38 through which the inner end of the rod extends. As shown, the portion 37 also has an upstanding projection 39 (Fig. 4) which is receivable in a suitable longitudinal slot 40 in the inner end of the rack member 33 and forms a guide for the latter. Herein, it will also be noted that a co-operating rack guide and spacing member 41 is held in position by suitable members 42 and carries the projections 37 and 39, while a co-operating member 43 similarly connected to the casing 1 also forms a co-operating guide for the member 33. Attention is also directed to the fact that the rack member 33 is provided with teeth 44 adapted to mesh with the teeth 25 on the member 20, and that it is also provided with the controlling member 7 which has its shank 45 fixed to the member 33 between the member 5 and the slot 40 in the member 33 and projecting out through a longitudinal slot 46 in the cover 2. Thus it will be evident that when the member 2O is adjusted longitudinally by the member 6 into mesh with the teetli 44 on the rack 33, the...

Attention here is also directed to the fact that the member 43 is fixed in the inner face of the member 15, while an arcuate slot 50 is provided in the adjacent wall of the case 1 through which the member 48 extends. Herein it will be noted that this arcuate slot 50 extends Jfrom a point under the rack 27 (Fig.
at a point under the rack 27 on the opposite side of the axis of the member 20. Thus a yvery expeditiously substantial length of the member 15is exposed on each sideof the axis of the member 20. As a result of this construction it will be evident that a wide range of possible positions is provided for the member 48 in such manner as to enable the combination to be changed readily for different locks by simply locating the member 48 in different positions on' the same side or in different positions on the opposite side of the axis of the member 20.
Considering the operation of the mechanism described, let us assume that both bolts are in locking position, and that the dog 29 has been set. In this position of the parts, to unlock the same it is necessary, after pushing in the member 6 to a proper point to cause the member 2O to engage with the teeth 82, to rotate the member 20 to release the dog 29,. shift the member 20 slightly reversely ylongitudinally into engagement with the teeth 26 on the rack 27, rotate thev member 2O to unlock the bolt 4, shift the member 2O longitudinally out of engagement with the rack 27 rotate the member 20 so that its aperture 49 registers with the tooth 47, then shift it longitudinally past the tooth and into registry with the teeth 44 on the rack 33, and then rotate it to release the bolt 5. In locking the same, it will be evident that the bolt 5, being a spring bolt, will take care of itself, while the bolt 4 will be locked by successively actuating the rack 27 and dog 29. It will also be evident that the member 2O may be left in any of its operative positions or in planes between the planes of its operative positions. It will also be evident that not only may the combination of different locks be varied by varying the location of the member 48 on the member l5, but that whenever it is desired to change the combination of any lock, this may be readily done by'changing the position of the member l5 relative to the arcuate slot 50.-
It will be evident that the lock is exceedingly safe since the different longitudinal and rotary positions of the control member make it exceedingly-difficult for an unauthorized person to get the right combination. 0n the other hand, to one familiar with the combination, the lock may be unlocked or locked and conveniently. In practice it will of course be understood that the various longitudinal positions of the shaft 8 may be suitably indicated on the latter. It will also be evident that these figures with the rotation figure, which indicates the position wherein the aperture 49 will clear thetooth 47, will constitute a combination of longitudinal and rotary movement easy to remember. Herein, for example, the longitudinal positions in which the member 2O engages with the member 32 and with the teeth 44 of the rack 33, have been indicated by spaced lines and numerals 2 and 3 on the shaft 8. At the same time it will also be observed that the lock is not only readily openable from the outside by one familiar with the use of the same, but when the bolt 4 is withdrawn and the member 2() is out of engagement with the rack 33, also provides a construction in which the bolt 5 is usable as an ordinary spring latch. These and other advantages of my improved construction will, however, be apparent to those skilled in the art.
While I have in this application specically described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that the same is shown for purposes of illustration, and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
llVhat I claim as new and desirel to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a combination lock having a case, a
plurality of bolt mechanisms therein, operating mechanism therefor including a longitudinally and rotatably adjustable member within said case forming a permanent part of said lock and adapted toco-operate with either mechanism, and means within said case `for inhibiting passage of said member from one mechanism to the other save when moved into a predetermined position.
2. In a lock, a plurality of bolts each provided with a rack member spaced from the other rack member, a co-operating rotatable toothed member engageable at will with different rack members in different positions,
.and a longitudinally shiftable and rotatable controlling member carrying said -toothed member. f 1 f 3. In a lock, a plurality of bolts each having a rack member spaced from thevother rack member, a `co-operating rotatable and longitudinally-movable toothed member engageable at will with different rack members in different positions, and means for requiring predetermined movements of said rotatable toothed-*member to actuate different rack members. f

In a lock, a plurality ofl vertically spaced bolts each having a rack and said yracks disposed in laterally offset plan-es, a rotatable toothed member engageable with said racks in different positions, and a con!l trolling member longitudinally adjustable to adjust 'said toothed member and rotatable therewith. f n
6. `In a lock, a' plurality of vertically spaced bolts each having an actuating por-r bolts.
7. ln a lock, a plurality of bolt members each having an actuating member, a co-operating rotatable and apertured member forming a permanent part of the lock and longitudinally shittable into engagement with different actuating members, and a stationary member between said actuating members and co-operating with said apertured member passing through the apertures in said rotatable member only in a predetermined rotary position of said rotatable member.
8. ln a lock, a plurality of bolt members each having an operatively connected rack member, a co-operating rotatable and apertured toothed member longitudinally shiftable .into engagement with the different rack members, and a stationary member between said rack members passing through the aperture in said toothed member only in a predetermined rotary position oi" said toothed member.
9. In a lock, a spring actuated bolt having releasing means operable from one side of the lock, a co-operating bolt, and operating connections for both of said bolts operative from the opposite side of the lock and having an operating member and co-operating combination presenting means within the lock for inhibiting successive operation of said bolts save upon movement of said operating member in a predetermined sequence 10. In a lock, a spring actuated bolt having releasing means operable from one side ot' the lock, a co-operating bolt, and operating connections for both of said bolts operative from the opposite side of the lock and having an operating member forming a permanent part of the lock and both longitudinally and rotatably movable and Cooperating combination presenting means for inhibiting successive operation of said bolts save upon movement of said operating member in a predetermined sequence.
11. ln a lock, a spring actuated bolt having releasing means operable Jfrom the interior, a co-operating bolt, operating connections for the latter operative only from the exterior and comprising a longitudinally and rotatably adjusted control member, and operative connections controlled by said control. member for successively operating said bolts upon rotary and longitudinal movement of said control member in a predetermined sequence.
12. In a lock, a spring actuated bolt having releasing means operable from the interior, a co-operating bolt, operating connections for the latter operative only from the exterior and comprising a longitudinally and rotatably adjusted control member, and.
operative connections controlled by said control member comprising a toothed member movable with said control member and rack members connected to said bolts and engagea-ble with said toothed member in dierent longitudinal positions of the control member.
13. In a lock, a spring actuated bolt having releasing means operable from the interior, a co-operating bolt, operating connections Jior the latter operative only from the exterior and comprising a longitudinally and rotatably adjusted control member, operative connections controlled by said control member comprising a toothed member movable with said control member and having an aperture and rack members connected to said bolts and engageable with said toothed member in different longitudinal positions of the control member, and a stationary toothed member receivable in said aperture in said iirst mentioned toothed member in a predetermined rotary position of the latter.
14. ln a lock, a plurality of bolt members` each having a rack member, and a co-operating toothed member longitudinally shiftable into engagement with the different rack members, said toothed member having an aperture therein, a co-operating stationary member between said rack members received in said 'aperture in a predetermined rotary position of said toothed member, spring means connected to one of said rack members, supplementary dog mechanism locking the other rack member and operable by said toothedl member, and combination mechanism comprising a dial and a longitudinally adjustable and rotatable controlling member co-operating with said dial and movable with said toothed member.
15. ln av lock, a casing having a plurality of bolt apertures Vin an edge thereof, a plurality of bolts movable in said apertures and each having a rack member guided in the casing, spring mechanism connected to one of said bolt members co-operating to form a spring latch, a toothed locking and releasing dog co-operating with the other bolt member, and a toothed member engageable with said rack members and dog in different longitudinal positions and rotatable to actuate either of the same in either direction.
16. In a lock, a casing having a plurality oi bolt apertures in an edge thereof, a plurality of bolts movable in said apertures and each having a rack member guided in the casing, spring mechanism connected to one of said bolt members co-operating to form a spring latch, a toothed member engageable with said rack members in different longitudinal positions and rotatable to actuate the same, and means permitting passage of said toothed member from operative connection With one rack member into operative connection With the other only after rotation of said toothed member into a predetermined rotary position.
17. In a lock, a easing having a plurality of bolt apertures in an edge thereof, a plurality of bolts movable in said apertures and each having a rack member guided in the casing, spring mechanism connected to one of said bolt members (io-operating to form a spring latch, a toothed member engageable with said rack members in different longitudinal positions and rotatable to actuate the same, a longitudinally and rotatably adjustable shaft member movable With said toothed member, and co-operating combination means carried by said casing and shaft member including a combination member rotatable with the shaft member While permitting independent longitudinal adjustment of the latter.

In a lock, a casing having a plurality o-f bolt apertures in an edge thereof, a plurality of bolts movable in said apertures and each having -a rack connected thereto and guided in the casing, spring mechanism connected to one of said bolt members co-operating to form a spring latch, a toothed member engageable With said rack members in different longitudinal positions and rotatable to actuate the same, a longitudinally and rotatably adjustable shaft member movable With said toothed member,co-operatingcombination means carried by said casing and shaft member including a combination member rotatable With the shaft member While permitting independent longitudinal adjustment of the latter, a guide carried by said casing and receivable in the inner end of said shaft member, and rotatable guiding means carried by one of sai-d combination members and engageable with the other.
19. In a lock, a casing, a plurality of bolts movable therein, rack members connected to said bolts and guided in said casing, a toothed member eng-ageable With said rack members in different longitudinal positions and rotatable to actuate the same, a longitudinally in a predetermined angular position relative to the latter.

In a lock, a casing, a pluralityA of bolt-s movable therein, rack members connected to said bolts and guided in said casing, a toothed member engageable With said rack members in dierent longitudinal positions and rotatable to actuate the same, a longitudinally and rotatably adjustable member movable With said toothed member, co-operating combination meansV carried by said casing and shaft member including a combination member rotatable With the shaft member While permitting independentv longitudinal adjustment of the latter and a co-operating combination member relativ-e to Which said Vfirst mentioned member is adjustable, a controlling member carried by said co-operating memberv and engageable With said toothed memberto inhibit longitudinal shifting of Y the latter beyond said control member save in a predetermined angular position relative to the latter, and means for enabling adjustment of said control member to vary the controlling position thereof.-
