Description

H ROYER.
RAW-HIDE BELTING-ROPE.
Patented May 29,1877.
Witnesse N. PETERS PHOTO LITHOGRAPHERNWAEHXNGTON D C UNITED HERMAN ROYER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAWHIDE BELTlNG-ROPE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,374, dated May 29, 1877; application filed January 27, 1877.
1'0 all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN RoYER, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improved Belting-Rope; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved article of belting-rope, which shall be free from the fault of stretching too much, or being too stifl' to move freely around small pulleys, and from liability to crack and break off by use.
Round rope of various kinds is largely employed for the purpose of driving grooved pulleys, and it is very difiicult to obtain an article which will work well and be durable. When these ropes are made of leather which has undergone the ordinary process of chemical tanning, they are of inferior tensile strength, from the effects of the tanning.
When made of pure rawhide these ropes are too stifi'to run well on small pulleys. They will stretch too much, and from their stiffness will eventually cut and break or wear out.
My invention consists in making ropes of fulled or mechanically-prepared rawhide, and it is done by first preparing the hide mechanically by a method for which Letters Patent were issued to me May 12, 1868, and AprilZl, 1874, or by any other means for rendering rawhide pliable without tanning or other chemical process.
I avoid the use of salts, acids, alkalies, or astringents, forthe reason that they impair the native strength and resistance to abrasion for which pure rawhide is noted. After the hide is made pliable it is cut around in long threads by hand or by machine, and these threads are cemented together and wound upon spools or bobbins, and twisted or plaited into rope.
The rope made of this prepared rawliide 'ters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, beltingrope, formed from long threads of prepared rawhide, cemented together, and twisted or plaited into rope, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
HERMAN ROYER. [L. 8.]
