BROOM.
No. 191,373. Patented May 29,1877.
mrussszs: INVENTIIBrS mFEIERS. PNDTO-LITHOGRAPMER. WASHINGTON D UNITED JAMES RONEY, OF SCOTLAND, MISSOURI, AND THOMAS RONEY, OF HYDE PARK, ILLINOIS. I
IMPROVEMENT IN BROOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l9l,378, dated May 29, 1877 application filed April 30, 1877. v
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES RONEY, of Scotland, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, and THOMAS 30mm, of Hyde Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stock for Brooms, Brushes. and Mops, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a side View of our improved stock. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same taken through the line at m, Fig. 1.

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved stock for brooms, brushes, and mops, which shall be simple in construction and convenient and reliable in use, holding the filling firmly, and being readily filled.
The invention consists in the combination of the seamless stock, ribbed upon its inner surface, and provided with a screw-collar, the movable clamps ribbed upon their outer surfaces, and the handle made with a conical forward end, and having a screwthread formed upon it, with each other, as hereinafter fully described. 1 Y
A is the stock, which is cast in one piece, without seam or joint, and in open-work, or skeleton form, to make it light. Upon the inner surface of the lower part of the stock A are formed ribs a to sink into the filling and hold it securely from being drawn out.
B are two parallel clamping-plates, which are hung from the upper part of the stock by wires 0, of such a length that the said plates B may bejust within the mouth of the stock A. Upon the outer sides of the plates B are formed ribs 12, to sink into the filling and hold it from being drawn out.
Upon the top of the stock A is formed a collar, (1., which has a screw-thread cut in its inner surface, to receive the screw-thread out upon the lowerpart of the handle D. The lower end of the handle D is made conical, so as, when the said handle is screwed down, to enter between the plates B and press them apart, clamping the filling between their ribbed outer surfaces and the ribbed inner surface of the stock A, and holding said filling securely. v
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the seamless stock A, ribbed upon its inner surface, and provided with a screw collar, the movable clamps B, ribbed upon their outer surfaces, and the handle D, madewith a conical forward end, and having a screw-thread formed upon it, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
