Guides 40 are secured to said die 36 and are placed one rearwardly of said strip 39 and one forwardly of said strip 39.
The staples 10 which are severed from the strip 39 are deposited inthe corresponding nests or gauges 35; all of said nests 35 are provided with suitable openings for the staples l0, which nest on thetop of the corresponding forming dies 34; each of said dies 34 is provided with openings to receive therein the finished staples 10 after they are bent into the shape of a stirrup by means of aset of'pu-nches 4l. The latter are carried by the horizontal platel 43 on a bracket 42 which is sho-wn as positioned at and is secured to the right ,side of the rain 17.
This action of bending the staples .is performed by said punches 4l and each of said dies 34 when the `latter isV positioned yat the right side of the carrier 27, after the carrier has been revolved through a quarter of a revolution from the position at which said staples l0 have been blanked flat by said punches 37 and die 36.
Strips of cloth or tape 44v are passed over the front part of said carrier 27 and the corresponding die 34 which is positioned thereon after the finished staples l0 have been left deposited in said die at the completion of the bending-operation and after said turntable has been Vrotated through aY second quarter of a revolution from its aboveposition of blanking; the strips 44 are intermittently fed from right to left in Fig. l by a mechanism whichy is hereinafter described.
In this last position the finished staples 10 are'V fastened to the tapes 44 by means of a set of upwardly striking punches 45 which are carried by a block 46, which is connected to the forked forward end of a substantially horizontally disposed lever 47 by means of a short vertical link 48. Said lever 47 is .pivotally connected by means of a spindle-49 to the frame 11 near the base 23 of the press. The rearend of said lever 47 is provided with a follower 7l, which is actuated by a suitable cam 72 on a shaft 73, which receives its motion from the gear 22 through a gear 74 'which is inv mesh with said gear 22, a pair of bevel gea-rs 7.5 and 76 and an inclined spindle V7 7 which extends downwardly rearwardly from said gear 74 toV said gear 75.

The-mechanism for feeding the strips of cloth ortapes 44 includes a slottedl crank 111 which is secured to the forward end of the shaft97 and has adjustably pivotally connected thereto by means of a pin 11-2fone end of a connecting rod 113, the other end of which is pivotally connectedby means of a pin 114'to the lower end of a lever 115; the latter is pivotally connected at an intermediate point thereof by means of a pin 116 to ahorizontal sliding block 117 and at the upper end thereof by means of a spindle 118 to one end of each of a pair-of parallel bars 119; the other ends-of said bars 119" are pivotally connected by means of a spindle 1120 tou the knuckles of a pair of togglejoints 121.
