Figure 7 shows a somewhat modifiedrforni of the device. In this form they pivot 9a corresponding to the pivot 9 of Figure l, is located outside of the working surface of the semi-heart-shaped member indicated as 8a. The working edges are also shown asV being slightly corrugated as at 22'so that a better grip may be had on the line. Corrugatioiis may of vcourse be used in any of the forms of device shown.
A further modification is shown in Figure 8, the fixed and movable `members being indicated as 6b and 8b respectively.` In this form of device rolling friction has been substituted for sliding friction, the cord 14 passing between the working edges of the fixed and movable members and about a pulley 24 carried by the pivot 9b which may also be the pivot for the movable vmember 8b. The cord then passes about another pulley 25 carried, by the movable member 8b at its free end; thence about a pulley 26 mounted on the base. Guides l5 and Q0 yserve the same function as these guides do in the construction `shown in Figure 1. The pulley 24 is of such diameter that the ymoment of force tends yto rotate the member 8b abou-t its pivot '9b in a clockwise rdirection and thereby ease the pressure between vthe working edges to permit the line 4to run free. e
What I claim as new is 1. In a device of the character described,

In a device of the character described, in combination, a base, a semi-circular member fixed thereto, a semi-heartshaped member `pivoted to the base adjacent the fixed member so that the straight edges of said members lie substantially parallel to each other but slightly separated when the pivoted member is in normal position, each of said members being peripherally grooved.

In a device ofthe character described, in combination, a base, la semi-circular' -member fixed thereto, a semi-heart-shaped member pivoted to the base .adjacent the vfixed member, said members having working edges between which a yline may be passed and looped about the pivoted lmember and the fixed member, the construction and arrangement being such that the line is clamped by said working edges when the cord vis pulled in a direction to cause the p-ivoted member to move toward the fixed n member and means for moving the pivoted member to vrelease the clamping action.
In a device of the character described, in combination, a base, a semi-circularlmem- 'ber fixed the-reto and` lia-ving a groove in its rounded portion of such sizeand shape as to fit a cord or rope and having a shallow groove along its straight edge, a semi-heartshaped member pivoted to the base adjacent saidgfixed member, saidv sein-i-heart-shaped member also having'a groeve :in yitsrounded edge of similar shape and size to the afore, said groove 'and a shallow groove in its straight edge, the piveted member in normal position having its straight edge vspaced slightly from the straight edge of the fixed member and adapted ,to clamp a cord between its edge and the edge of the vfixed member when the 'cord is'loeped about both Vmembers and -is pulled inthe direction .to v:cause the pivoted member to move towards `the fixed member.
6. In a device of the character described,
.in combination, :a base,a semi-circular Kmember fixed -'thereto and having a groove lin its rounded portion-of such ysize and shape as to fit a-cord or rope and having a shallow groove along its straight edge, a semi-heartshaped member pivotedV ad] acent said fixed Y member, said.semi-heartfshaped member also having a groeve -in its rounded portion of similarshape and size, and a shallow groove invits straight edge, the :pivoted membery in normal position having.r its straight edge spaced slightly from the straight yedge v4of' 4.the 'fixed member and adapted to clamp the cord between itsfedge gand the vedge .of the fixed member whenxthe cord :is looped about both members and yis pulled yinthe direction to cause the free end of thepvoted member to move towards the fixed member, and a guide for the oord carried by vthe base substantially in line with the straight portions of said members.
