WILLIAM H. HAYLOOK, OF J ONESVILLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN HIGGINS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAD-iRON HEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,340, dated May 29, 1877 application filed April 2, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HAYLOCK, of Jonesville, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sad-Iron Heater, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view, and Fig. 2 a vertical central section on line 0 c, Fig. 1, of my improved sad-iron heater.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to improvement in sad-iron heaters, so that the same may be used at will for heating sadirons, a tailors goose, or for boiling starch in a convenient manner; and the invention consists of a sad-iron heater having a chimney of inverted conical shape, supporting on an angular seat a top for sadirons, or a box-top, or a flat pan-top, the escape of heat being arranged at the seat and the top parts.
The lamp is supported at the lower part of the heater, and the lower end of the wicktubes set into a double disk, filled with plaster-of-paris, or other non-conductor of heat.
In the drawing, A represents the supporting standor arms of my sad-iron heater; B, the detachable and interchangeable top of the same, and O the chimney, of inverted conical shape, and of suitable sheet metal, that extends from the burners c of' the lamp upward to an angular seat, 0, on which the top B is fitted by corner-pieces a, leaving spaces at the sides for the escape of the heat, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2. v
The top part B may be of difi'erent shape, according to the purpose for which the heater is to be used, a fiat top with flanged faces being used for sad-irons, as shown in the drawing, while for heating a tailors goose a box-top is used, and for boiling starch a pan-- shaped top, and so on. All these different top parts are fitted to the angular top or seat 0 of the chimney, and to the projecting ends of the arms A, and are so arranged that the heat escapes between the same and the bottom and sides of the top parts, so as to beat them in more efiective manner by the direct heat of the flames thereon, as well as by the heated air passing around the sides of the top parts.
The lower part of the chimney is held in position by arms A, and the air supplied to the burners by perforations at the lower part of the closed chimney, and by a distributingplate of wire-gauze or perforated sheet metal.
The operating ratchet-wheels are arranged below the base of the chimney, and the lower ends of the wick-tubes D set into a box, IE, formed of a double disk filled with plaster-ofparis, or other non-conductor of heat, and arranged at the top of the lamp-fount E. The non-conducting box E prevents the heating up of the oil-receptacle, and dispenses with any danger of accident, while admitting the, use of sheet metal for the oil-receptacle. The heater may thus be used for difierent purposes in effective manner, and without the least danger of explosion or accident.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with burners, ot' chimney 0, seat 0, corner'pieces a, and arms A A, arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
WM. H. 'HAYLOGK.
