Description

W. McCLELLAND.
THREE-HORSE EQUALIZER.
No. 191,245. Patented May 29,1877.
VVITNESEEE= lNVE NTEH? N. PETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER. wAsmNGToN, D C;
UNITED STATES WILLIA M MGGLELLAND,
PATENT QFFIQEQ OF FOWLER, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN THREE-HORSE EQUALIZERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 19 1,245, dated May 29, 1877 application filed October 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WM. MOCLELLAND, of Fowler, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a draftequalizer for three horses, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, which fully illustrates my invention, A represents the pole or tongue of a wagon or other vehicle or machine on wheels. On this pole, near the inner end, is secured a plate, B, which extends to one side of the pole, as shown, and has at or near its outer end a strap, 0, passing over it, the ends of said strap being fastened to the plate and the body of the strap elevated above the same for the levers D and E to be passed between them. The plate B is provided with a series of holes, as shown, so that the plate can be adjusted back and forth on the tongue to regulate the side draft, as may be found necessary.
The lever D is, at one end, provided with a double-tree, G. having a single-tree, H, at each end, and at the other end of said lever D on the front side is secured a casting, I, which is perforated with a series of holes, as shown. Through the hole at the inner end of this casting is passed a pin, a, which also passes through the strap 0 and plate B, thus pivoting the lever D a suitable distance to one side of the tongue. From either one of the other holes in the casting I a loop, 12, connects with a similar casting, I, secured to the rear side of the short lever E, and a pin, d,-passing through the strap, plate, and said casting I, thus pivots said short lever E in its place. This lever is at its outer end provided with a single-tree, H.
In each of the castings I I, where the bolts a d pass through, there is made a slot sufficiently large to allow the levers a free movement, and the hole in the plate on the short lever for the pivoting-bolt is about one-half inch in front of the hole for the loop.
By adjusting the loop b in different holes on the casting I, the amount of force exerted by the long lever on the short one, or vice versa, is increased or diminished as required. And by the addition of the plates or castings I I to the levers D E, respectively, said levers are materially strengthened, as there are no holes required in them for the pivoting-bolts.
This invention is intended as an improvement on my patent of April 6, 1875, No. 161,623.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a draft-equalizer, the combination of the tongue A, the plate B, having a strap, 0, for the purpose of forming the pivots a d, lever D, double and single trees G H, lever E, castings I I, and connecting-rod b, the said castings having slots or enlarged openings for their pivots to pass through, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of September, 1876.
WM. MOCLELLAND.
