Patented May 22 1-877.
INVENTOB M ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIcE CATHERINE HASTINGS, OF OSWEGO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [91,050, dated May 22,1877; application filed April 30, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, CATHERINE HASTINGS, of the city and county of Oswego, New York, have invented a new and Improved Fruit- Jar, of which the following is a specification:
The figure is a side view of a fruit-jar to which my improvement has been applied.
The object of this invention is to furnish animproved attachment for fruit-jars, to enable them to be conveniently handled when filled with hot fruit, and at other times, which will not interfere with standing the full fruitjars upon their tops, if desired, which will enable the jars to be used for holding and carrying various articles, and which shall be simple in construction and inexpensive in manufacture.
The invention consists in the combination of the lugs and the wire-bail with the metallic screw-band that secures the glass cover to the glass jar, as hereinafter fully described.
0 represents an ordinary glass fruit-jar.
D represents its glass cover, and E the metallic screw band, by which the cover D is secured upon the mouth of the jar 0. About the construction of these parts there is nothing new. To the opposite sides of the band E are soldered or otherwise secured lugs A, to which are pivoted the ends of a wire bail, B, as shown in the figure.
With this construction, the bail B will not interfere with standing the jars 0 upon their tops, and at the same time will enable the jars to be conveniently handled and carried.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the lugs A and the wire bail B with the metallic screw-band E, that secures the glass cover D to the glass jar O, substantially as herein shown and described.
GATHERIN E HASTINGS.
