A particular object of my invention isto provide a double threaded, single pointed speed bit which is 'equally well shaped for use in either hard orsoft wood and so constructed that the auger willbe fed into the 'wood at a uniform degree of travel and at a rate of speed much higher ythan at which present auger bits in use are capable ofy enteringthe material tobe bored, in this way materially lessening the amount of time consumed in boring operations and lessening the cost thereof. j
Another important obj ect'of my invention is to provide an auger having a single pointed speed end which is combined withA a plurality of upper and lower cutting edges on the auger body so' thatchips are cut away cleanlyzand rapidly and without theuseof eXcess power in driving the bit into the wood or material to be bored. - Referring to the drawingindetail and-in particular to the construction illustratedfin Figure 1,15 illustrates an auger bit, the shank or body portion 11 of which is provided at its upper end -with a squared portion adapted to fit into'the chuck of a brace or other turning implement. Theauger bit is essentially formed from a flat strip of material twisted into apair of spiral edgesl?) and 14, the shapingof the bit being so carried out that the material-between the edges, as illustrated in Figure 6, is very thin as at -A,-the edges being flared at opposite sides'to provide the cutting edges 13 and 14. An auger bit having a cross sectional shape presenting channels of substantially the widthof half the diameter of the :bit at the center of the bit, the outer edges ofthe channelsy being iiaredto provide cutting edges, eachof said channels terminating in a horizontal cutting edge bevelled at one side thereof, the outer ends of saidA horizontal cutting edges being bounded by vertical cutters having cutting edges disposed above andbelow said horizontal cutting edge, a tapered portion terminating ina point, double threads extending to the extreme tip of the tapered portion to provide a lead screw, said threads gradually tapering out and merging in a common point' the .lower end of each ofthe cutting 4edges eing positioned in, the center line of the screw landthe meeting point of said cutting edges forming a downwardly directed point.- In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to -this specification, this 27th day of May 1931'.
