Description

Filed Apri; 14 1930 INENTOR v BY y ma'. zum
ATTORNEY Patented May 16, 1933 ,PATENT OFFICE GEORGE E. NERNEY, 0F ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T0 BAY STATE OPTICAL COMPANY, A CORPORATION 0F MAINE DEVICE ron. MANICURING Application led April 14,
r1`his invention relates to implements for manicuring.
Among the objects thereof are to provide a simple and practical device of the above nature, a device of such nature convenient to use and efficient in action, and such a device of compact construction and which can readily be carried in the pocket. Other objects will be in part obvious and in i part pointed out hereinafter.
rIlhe invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangements o-f parts, as will be illustratively described herein, and
"` the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of various possible embodi-v ments of this invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view thereof; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective on an enlarged scale of a portion of the device shown fi in rig. 1.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing. Y
Referring now to the drawing in detail,
i the part is formed of a sheet of metal,
preferably steel or an alloy thereof, and is substantially fiat and preferably o-f substantially elliptical outline. It may here be noted that the term elliptical is used w' in a broad sense to cover any shape approximating an ellipse, including a circle, which may be considered an ellipse of equal axes.
The part 10 is provided about its edge, which is concave as indicated at 11, with vserrations 12 to form a nail le. It is also preferably provided adjacent its edge portions on its fiat surface with a bordering ilev surface 18, although this is not essential in the broader aspects of the invention.
At one point along the edge of the disk 10 there are provided a pair of recesses 15 Within which are seated the flanges 16 of a nail cleaning device 17 having a prong 18. The device 17 is pivoted as at 19 to the part 10 and is adapted to fold down- 1930.V serial No. 444,083.
wardly uponthe edge, as indicated in the dotted l1nes, so as to havefits flanges it Withinthe respective recessesand have its prong portion substantially embraced by s,
position by means of projections 20 formed 60 in the inner walls of the flanges adapted to snap into suitable notches 21 formed inthe disk. It mayV` here be noted that the term fdisk is used in a broad sense to cover any substantially flat member having a substan'-, 65'
tial degree of width as compared with its length, and it may also be noted that the term rounded is broadly used.
In the-use of the device as a file, thel edge A portion may be employed effectively and is adapted to gain easy access to parts of the finger-nail which are difficult or uncomfortable to attack with a manicure file of the ordinary form. Furthermore, the shape of.
the disk readily affords a firm gras during theuse of the device, whether it be or filing or cleaning the nails. It may also be noted that the edge of the disk affords a-conven ient means for pushing back the cuticle n y If it be desired to clean the from the nail. nails, the resilient member "'17 is snapped out of its closed position into the raised position shown in Fig. 3, whereupon it may conveniently be handled and thereafter beV snapped into closed position.
Thecompact 'conformation of the entire device will be clear, and it will also be seen that it is readily carried in the pocket without the chance of perforation of the pocket lining. Y
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects ofv this invention are gained land that thesame Vis Well suited tomeet the conditions of practical use.
As many possible embodiments may .be made of the above invention, and as manyl changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter hereinbefore set forth or shown 100 in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. In a manicuring implement, in combination, a rounded disk, the edge portion of whi'chmis formedfas a tileand having mounted thereon a nail cleaning device adapted to swing toward and away from 'theperipheryof saiddiskw. g I
2. In a manicuring: implement, in com#l bination, a le member, and a nail cleaning member pivotally mounted onfthe periphery thereof to swing toward andaway` from the periphery and "shaped'tosubstantially embrace the periphery whenl ,it is swungv inwardly. A
Inga manicuring implement, in cem-`l bination, a substantiallyflat member having a le portion formed alongits edge, and a nail vcleaner ositioned substantially within the ,outline o? saidirs't member` and mountedthereon to move outwardlyand project beyondthe peripherythereof. e.
4'. lIn a lmanicuring implement, in com bination, a substantially elliptical disk having aconcave file surface atits edge and eX- tending. substantially about the same, and a nail lcleaning member movably mounted tlleeo'nr and ladapted to` movedoutwardly from the periphery of said disk to vproject into yo sition forusefV .p
' 5. n a manicuring implement, .inr combinjation, a substantially elliptical .disk havaconcavefile surface a-t itsedge andfeX- tending substantially about the s`ame ,and a nail cleaning .member movably mounted thereon andadapted to be moved outwardly fromthe periphery ofsaid disk toproject into position for. use,. said nail. cleaning member being pivoted*adjacentl `the edge of said .first member to swing toward and aWay from the same.
, 6,.,In a manicuring implement, in comv-V 2 bination, a` substantially elliptical disk having a `concave le surface at its edge and eX-` tending substantiallyvabout the same,v a nail cleaning membermevably mounted thereon and adapted to .be `.moved fo'ut-wardly `from Athe periphery of said disk to project into position for use, said nail cleaning member bein pivotedadjacentthe edgelof said first mem ler to swing toward and. away from they same, and means adapted releasably to hold said last member in its innermost position,v
In` testimony whereof, I have signed'my name to 'this specication this 18th day of March, 1930. e y
