The present invention relates to improvements in a copy holder and has particular reference to a device for holding a note book or sheets of paper or printed books opening sidewise to be copied in convenient position for a typist to read, in combination with means for indicating the particular line from which the typist is copying.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a copy holder of the character described that is particularly convenient in use, may be readily adjusted to hold the book or paper to be copied from at the right angle so that the notes may be read with the least 5 strain on the eyes and in which the copy may be raised and lowered to suit special conditions.

A further object of the invention is to provide a convenient means for supporting the 0 book, which allows the pages of the book to be turned over with ease and to remain in the turned-over position by their own weight.

A further object of the invention is to provide a convenient means for holding sheets of paper to a supporting frame.

A still further object of the invention is to provide, in combination, with the book and paper holding means, a sight bar and a convenient means for lowering and raising the same.

Further objects and advantages of my invention will appear as the specification proceeds.

The means for holding the copy comprises a plate 3 preferably made of a length slightly exceeding that o-fthe standard stenographic note book and of a width exceeding the width of the latter and having a second plate 4 secured to the lower section thereof by means of screws 5, the second plate having an in: termediate section 6 offset and spaced from the main plate 3 so asto allow one cover of a note book to be introduced between the two plates for holding the cover in place. The plate 3 is formed with a flange 11 along the bottom edge, on which the bottom or a book may be made to rest, and with a reinforcing flange 12 along one side edge thereof, while along the other side. edge and on the underface of the plate there is provided a trough-shaped housing 13 fastened by means of a flange 14 and positioned so as to leave a slot 15 between the extreme edge of the plate and one wall 16 of the housing.

In the housing is mounted, in parallel relation to the edge of the plate, a threaded rod 17 which is held against endwise motionby a block 18 at the top and by a collar 19 at the bottom and which has a nut 20 revolvable thereon, the latter nut having an arm 21 extending through the slot 15. The plate 10 extending rearwardly from' the upper edge of the plate 3 may have clips 26 pivoted thereto, which latter are adapted to be sprung over the cover of the book for holding the same in place if the weight in itself is not sufficient for this purpose.

The frame thus far described is supported on a single post 27, which comprises a base 28, a vertical shaft 29 revolvably supported therein and a sleeve 30 telescoped on the shaft 29 and adapted to be held in vertically adjusted position byvmeans of the set screw 31. I11 the upper end of the sleeve, there is supported a short shaft 32, the upper end of whichmay be confined between two lips 33 projecting from the rear face of the plate 3, a bolt 34 and a wing nut 35 being used for holding the shaft 32'and the lips 33 in assembled relation. g

The operation of the device thus far describedwill be readily understood from the foregoing description,

The operator slips one of the covers of her note book between the plates 3 and t until the end of the cover comes to rest on the cross piece 8 which is adjusted to bring the top or hinged end of the note book to the elevation of the top of the plate 3. V The other cover is then swung over backward to rest on the plate 10 and maybe held in place by means of the clips 26 ifnecessary for a paper-covered note book. The individual pages may. then be turned one after the otherand naturally will remain in position as long as the stiffer covers are held in position. h

v For placing the frame in proper position relative to the eyes, the operator may raise and lower the same by moving the sleeve 30 relative to the shaft 29, she may turn the frame on the axis of the post and she may also tilt the frame into any suitable position upon operation of thewing nut 35.

To bring the sight bar 22 to the top of the page, the operator turns the knob 25, the turning motion of the rod17 raising the nut 20 and the sight bar; By a turning motion in the opposite direction, the sight bar may be lowered as the successive lines are being copied.

In Figure 5, there is shown a slight modification insofar as the rod 17 terminates in a bevel gear 36, which meshes with another bevel gear 37 disposed on a horizontal shaft 38 terminating in a knob 39. By use of this modification, the rod 17 may be manipulated through the horizontal rod 38, the knob of which may be in a more convenient position for the typist to operate than the knob 25 of the devicepreviously described.

The form shown in Figures 6 and 7 may be used for holding either a stenographic copy book or legal size papers.

In this form, I show a slight modification of a means for holding legal size paper to the frame, and which comprises a spring member 56 that extendsentirely across the face of the frame 3 and terminates in legs 57, these legs having their ends fixed to the frame. The legs 57 are formed with a coil 58 of-several turns for urging the member 56 into intimate contact with the frame 3, but which will allow the member to be flexed so as to re- Y ceive sheets of legal paper therebeneath.

I claim: 7,

1. In a copy holder of the character described, plate having a cross member fastened thereto in spaced relation and intermediateits length so as to allow a book cover to be introduced between theplate and the cross member and to be held to tile plate at a section intermediate its length while the other cover is swung about the upper edge of the plate, and means for supporting the plate, the spacing between the plate and the cross member corresponding substantially to the thickness of the book cover so that the latter is held in intimate contact with the plate throughout the length and width thereof.

2. In a copy holder line indicator of the character described, a channel-shapedhousing adapted to be mounted along one edge of a copy holding plate and underneath the latter, with one of the channel flanges slightly spaced from the plateand forming a slot with the latter, a guidemember in said housing, an element mounted on the guide and mov-, able along the length thereof, a sight bar, and means extending through the slot for connecting the sight bar to saidelement.
