DOOR CLOSER Filed Oct. 20, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented May 16, 1933 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DOOR CLOSER Application filed ctober20, 1931, Serial No. 569,983,-and in Sweden November 7, 1930.
Thisinvention relates to improvements in ing, said wings having screw holes for scourdoor closers and checks of the kind adapted ing the device to the door. Into the wall be.- to be used on a right hand as well as on a left tween the housing 1 and the cylinder 2 there hand door without rearrangement of its inis screwed a sleeve 4, said sleeve together 5 ternal mechanism, said door closers compriswith a neck 5, extending upwards in the hous- 55 ing a spring located inside the housing of the ing, surrounding the centrally located spindle closer, said spring being connected to two ro- ,6. and formin a bearing for said spindle the tatably arranged spring-holders for actuatsaid bearing box having in its upper part ing the spring alternatively. and secured suitable tightening elements such as packings.
9 against rotation in more than one direction, The spindle 6 extends downwards into the besides which there is located a central spincylinder 2 and isv provided with a crank 7, dle being at one end connected to a checking being connected to the common checking pismechanism and at the other end to a closing ton 9 by means of a pitman 8. arm, which is to be secured to the door frame The sleeve 4, facing the housing 1 is pro? or the like and is adapted to actuate the spinvided with a shoulder 10 for carrying an andle and the spring holders when the door is nular flange 11 rotatable on the said shoulder, being opened or closed. said flange having an upwardly extending The purpose of the present invention is to neck 12, surrounding partly the neck 5 of the effect an improved and simplified device in bearing sleeve 4 and partly the spindle 6 by such door closers. One object of the invenmeans of the part extending above the said tion is the arrangement of the spring holders sleeve, said neck 12 being at its outer end proin such a way that they can be easily taken vided with a collar 13, through which the out, exteriorly reached and operated and be spindle extends. The annular flange 11 is very reliably guided. In consequence of this provided with a stamped out portion 14, in object a screw-spring is substituted for the the form of a tongue or the like in which the helical springs generally used in door closers one end of a screw spring 15 is fixed, ina of the kind in question, said screw spring havsuitable manner, said spring, running from a ing its ends fixed to each of the spring holders. point of the flange 11 located outside the These features together with other features stamped out portion 14 of the outer part of 3 of the invention will behereinaft-er described, the flange. reference being had to the accompanying It may also be imagined that the support drawings. of the spring is located at the outer part of In the drawings, the flangell-and that the spring is fixed to' Figure 1 is a sectional view of a door check the said part by means of its double-folded and closer showing an embodiment of my inend. Further the flange 11' is at its circumvention, ference provided with a member of stages 16, Figure 2 is a plan view, the closing arm besteplike arranged to support the spring.-- At ing shown in dash-and-dot-lines. v the inside, of these stages there are projections Figure 3 is asectionalfview taken on the 17 to prevent the spring from being pulled 40 line IIIIII of Figure 1 and towards the centre when'the springis being 7 Figure 4is a sectional view takenon the strained. The said projections maybe arline IVIV of Figure 1; and ranged at another suitable point of the flange.
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view show- Further the flange 11 hasa downwardly diing the interlocking connection between the rooted stopping arm18, projecting from the neck and sleeve. 7 outer portion of the flange and normally '9 In the drawings I have shown a housing 1. resting against a shoulder 19 located inthe in which the spring mechanism is arranged wall of the housing 1. and a cylinder 2 disposed at right angles to In the upper part of the housing 1 a second said housing and integrally made therewith annular flange 20 is rotatably j ournalledem- G and with sidewings 3 located on the housbracing with its inwardly turned neck 21 the upper part of the neck 12, the said neck 12 thus forming a bearing for the neck 21. The flange 20 is provided with a fastening device 22 for the other end of the spring 15, support 23 and projections 24 for the same, corresponding to similar arrangements on the flange 11. Moreover the flange 20 is provided'with aprojection 25 (Figure 3) normally resting against an upwardly projecting shoulder 26 from the upperpart of the housing 1. Hereby it maybe observed that the spring support 22 and the ratchet 25, 26 are arranged about diametrically in the housing relatively to corresponding devices 14 and 18, 19 respectively on the inner flange 11, and that the shoulder 19 and the shoulder 26 are thus arranged relatively to the stopping arms or shoulders 18 and'25, that the flanges 11 and 20 are adapted to be rotated only in a direction, which is opposite to that er) wheel 29. The inner ratchet wheel 28 is journalled on the spindle 6 and the outer ratchet wheel 29 is journalled in the cover of the housing. The lever 30 for actuating the device, which is in a known manner connected to the frame or the like of the door, is fixed on to the upper end of the spindle and is provided with a double pawl 31, pivotally secured to the same, the upper arm 32 being intended to engage the ratchet wheel 28 and the lower arm 33 to engage the ratchet wheel The inner ratchet wheel 28 is provided with a neck 34 extending into the housing, the end portion 350i said neck being shaped as an inwardly directed annular flange surrounding the spindle 6, said flange having a dimension approximately corresponding to the collar 13 of the flange 11 and being pro vided with a pin36 engaging a hole of the said collar. The outer ratchet wheel 29 has also a neck 37 extending into the housing 1', said neck being journalled on the neck 34 and supported by the annular shoulder 20 of the neck 21 of the flange 20, said part surrounding the spindle '6 being interlocked with the said neck by means of a pin or the like 38 engaging a seat 39 in the shoulder 20. It is evident that the necks of the two ratchet wvheels may, in another suitable way than the one described, be connected to the necks of the flanges 11 and 20. V
When using the closer on different doors one or the other of the arms 32, 33 of the double pawl'3l, owing to, if the door is a right hand or left'hand door, will engage the opposite ratchet wheel 28, 29. If the closer is mounted on a right hand door it is evident that, because the closing arm 30' is swung'to the rightwhen the door is opened,
- "the inner spring holder 'or flange 11 will turn by the aid of the ratchet wheel 28, by which the spring 15 will be pressed together. The outer end of the spring is hindered hereby from moving, the outer spring holder or flange 20 not being able to rotate on account of the projection 25 engaging the shoulder 26. If the closer is mounted on a left hand door, the closing arm 30 will turn to the left when the door is opened, at which the arm 33 of the double pawl 31 will engage the ratchet wheel 29, and thereby turning the outer flange 20 around the upwardly extending neck 12 of the inner flange; during this operation the inner flange 11 is kept in its position by the stopping arm 18 resting against the shoulder 19, the spring '15 being pressed together. When the door is being opened the spindle 6 will, on account of the movement of the closing arm, turn and influence the checking mechanism in a known manner, and when the door is being closed by the effect caused by the spring force this movement is being regulated by the checking mechanism also in a known manner.
It is evident that the construction of the closer will make it easy to reach the inner parts of the same and will eflect a reliable guiding of the parts of the mechanism actuating the spring. Moreover an intermediate part,'specially arranged between the two spring holders in order to influence the same, will become unnecessary. The highly projecting neck 12 of the inner spring holder 11 will make possible the arrangement of a high neck 5 on the box 4, the said box thus obtaining a greater capacity of preventing leakage around the spindle 6.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.,A door closer comprising a housing, a helical spring'in the housing, a bearing box extending into the housing, a spindle journaled in the bearing box, a closing arm fixed to the spindle, upper and lower flanges in the housing, means for securing the respective terminals of the spring to the flanges, a neck carried by the lower flange confining the bearing box, a neck carried by the upperflange and j ournaled on the neck of the lower flange, and means connected with the respectiveflanges for stressing the spring reversely upon movement of the closing arm in reverse directions. 2. door closer as claimed in claim 1, wherein means are provided to interlock the respective flanges with the housing to prevent simultaneous movement of the flanges during swinging of the closing arm.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name. i
