IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,821, dated May 15, 1877; application filed March 31, 1877.
'part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective View, part sectional, of my at brush; and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of at brushes; and it consists in the employment of a ferrule provided with a continuous side wall perpendicular to its upper face, for the reception of the cemented ends of the wisps or bristles, in connection with a at handle, wedge-shaped at its lower end, which is driven through an opening in the upper face of the ferrule and connected thereto, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanyingdrawings, A designates a brush-handle, of uniform thickness, wedgeshaped at its lower end. C represents a ferrule, having a continuous side wal1,a,perpendicular to the upper face b of the ferrule, and provided with the oblong slot d.
The method of manufacturing my brush is as follows: The butts ofthe bristles or wisps are dipped in cement and inserted in the ferrule. The wedge-shaped handle is then driven into the central slot or opening d, separating the butts of the wisps into two parts, the sides of the wedge-shaped end of the handle forming on each side interior walls, between which and the continuous wall a of the ferrule the bristles are held and securely fastcned by brads and cement.
By this construction the upper ends and upper sides of the bristles are protected from injury by the upper face and continuous wall of the ferrule.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The flat brush consisting of the ferrule C having the continuous wall a, perpendicular to its upper slotted face b, and handle A, of uniform thickness and wedge-shaped at its lower end, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
REMICK W. CHAMPION.
