UNITED STATES ,oF i-cs ALFRED c. ANDREASEN, or OAK PAR-K, ILLINoIs, ASSIGNOR TO AIR-WAY ru v'rr COMPANY, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A coaroRArIoN or ILLINOIS PUMP Application filed J'unev24, 1929. Serial 1V0. 373,110.
This invention relates to pumps, and more particularly to devices of that Character for dispensing liquids from barrels and like closed containers. I
One of the objects of the invention is to provide for quickly attaching the pump to the container and removing it therefrom at will.
A further object of the invention is to improve generally upon pump structures of this 1 character, and particularly upon the pump illustrated in my Patent No. 1,67 2,401, granted June 5, 1928, so as to facilitate the manufacture thereof and to attain higher efliciency in operation.
Other objects and advantages to be attained will more fully appear in the following description. I
The invention consists in the novel structural features and in the parts and combina- 20 tions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and set forth in I the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrating a practical adaptation of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section showing the pump attached-to a liquid container;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section, on an enlarged scale, of the pump in the region of the 30 discharge spout and place of attachment to the container; I p
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3, of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a cross section of the bushing by which the pump is detachably secured to the container; and a r Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section, on an enlarged scale, to illustrate the details of the air check valve. I Referring now to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a liquid container in the form of a barrel, drum, tank, or the like, said containers having filler openings or bungs which are usually provided with removable closures or plugs. In carrying out the present invention the closures or plugs are removed from the containers and bushings 11 are substituted in place thereof, said bushings having provision for the interlocking engagement of the pump therewith. .Usually, the
closures or plugs havev a screw-threaded engagement with the container and, preferably, the bushing 11 is provided with a screw threaded portion 12 which isfitted to the correspondingly threaded opening in the container 1O. In the outer portion of the bush ing 11 is provided a socket having undercut lugs 18 on its peripheral wall, said lugs13 having inclined underfaces and being separated at their ends by notches 14, the latter being provided for the ,passage of lugs 15 projecting from the periphery of the reduced neck portion 16 of the pump..
The principal novel features of the present invention reside in the construction andarrangement of said neck portion 16 of the pump. The lower portion 17 of the neck 16 is reduced in diameter and is projected through the bore 18 in the inner portion12 of said bushing 11, into the container, said portion 17 having a pipe 19 attached thereto, said pipe extending in close proximity to the bottom of the container 10.
Within the neck 16 is a chamber 20, which communicates at its lower end with, said pipe 19 and at its upper end with the bore 21 in a nipple22, at the outer endof which latter is attached a spout, nozzle or'hose coupling element 23. I V
In the outer end portion of the neck 16 is a chamber 24 which communicates with a passageway 25 through a check valve 26. Preferably, said check valve is of the springpressed ball type, as illustrated in F ig. 6, in which the valve comprises a casingsecured in an opening in the division wall between said chamber 24 and passageway 25 and havingan air inlet opening 27 which is normally closed by the ball 28, the latter being yield ably held to its seat by the spring 29 which is interposed between said ball anda plug 30 in'the' valve casing.
Communication is established between said passageway 25 in the neck 16 of the pump and the interior of the container 10 by cutting away a part of the reduced portion 17 of the neck 16 at the side in the region of the said passageway 25, whereby it is opened to-communication at its inner end with the interior of said container through the bore 18 of said bushing 11.
At the outer end portion of the neck 16 is an annular flange or collar 31, at whose pe- 5 ripheral portion is an annular seat for the end of a tube 32 constituting the pump cylinder, the opposite end ofsaid tube 32 being closed by a cap member 33, the latter having a flange 34 similar to the flange 31 on the neck 16. The tube 32 is clamped securely between the two collars 31 and 34 by the tie bolts 35 which are engaged in ears 36 and 37, respectively, projecting from the peripheral portions of said flanges 31 and 34.
Slidablewithin the pump cylinder 32 is a plunger 38 which is preferably cupped, as shown, and composedof leather or othersu-itable flexible material. Said plunger is clamped between'a pair of opposed retaining plates 39 and 40 by a nut 41 which is screwthreaded onto the reduced end portion 42 of a reciprocatory bar or plunger rod 43, the latter being'extended through an axial opening in the'c'ap member 33 and being pivotally attached at its outer end'to anoperating handle 44, as at 45. Said operating handle 44 has an extension 46 which is 'pivotally attached at its end "to one end of a rod 47, as at 48, the opposite "end of said rod 47 being pivotally attached, as at 49, between a pair of ears 50 extending from the peripheral portion of the flange 31 on the neck portion 16 of the pump. The upper middle portion of the rod 47 is located between a pair of lugs 51 projecting from the peripheral portion of the'flange 34of the-cap member 33w'hereby said rod 47 is guided duringthe actuation of the handle 44 in reciprocating the "plunger in the pump cylinder and by which ari'angement said handle '44 is prevented from turning about the axis of the plunger rod 43, and thus relieves the pivots-48 and 49 of torsional strain.
When the pump is attached to the-container with an airtight jointure, which 'may be obviously eiiected' by providing a gasket 17 between the shoulder at the base-of the reduced portion 17 of the neck 16 andthe abut-- ting seat portion of the bushing 11, a head of compressed air may be created above the body of liquid in 'the container 10 and the liquid thereby forced out through the pipe 19, chamber 20 and nipple 22. On the up stroke of the plunger 38 the air in the upper portion of the pump cylinder 32 will pass between the wall ofthe cylinder and the peripheral portion of said plunger and into'the lower portion of the cylinder. As the handle is actuated to force the plunger downwardly the air in the lower portion of the cylinder 32 is forced through the check valve 26 and passageway 25 into the upperportion of the container 10, and continued reciprocation of the plunger the'necessary head of compressed air may be created and maintained in the upper portion of the container 10 to force the liquid therefrom. If it becomes necessary or desirable to release the pressure in the container 10, this may be accomplished by opening a relief valve 52 provided for the purpose on the neck portion 16 and communicating with the passageway 25 therein. Preferably, this relief valve is an ordinary pet cock or the like, and .itis secured in a threaded opening in said neck portion 16 in axial alignment with the opening in the inner wall in which the check valve 26 is mounted, these two aligned openings being so provided for convenience in manufacture.
The principal features of novelty in the; present invention reside inthe peculiar struc; ture of the neck portion of the pump and the facility with which it may be manufactured,
as well as providing for simplicity-and compactness of structure of the pump in general and its efficiency in operation, and ease with which it may be attached to andremoved from the container.
Obviously, the structure admits of considerable modification without in the least departing from the spiritand scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. The invention, therefore, is not limited to the specific construction and arrangement shown in the accompanying-drawing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V 1. A pump construction of the character described, adapted to be secured'within' the filling openingof a closed liquid container, comprising a pump having a neck portion adapted to be disposed upon the exterior of said container, a discharge spout member extending laterally from said "neck portion, a pump cylinder mounted upon one end of said neck portio'mia liquid discharge pipef connected to the lower opposite end of said neck portion and adapted to extend-in close proximity to the bottom of said container, a plurality of spaced lugs projecting from the peripheryof sa-id'lower neck portion, abushing for releasably interlocking said pump with-said container, said bushing being provided with means for connection within said filling opening and also provided with a socket adapted to receive said lower neck portion, and a plurality of undercut "lugs mounted upon said bush-ing andseparated tr1-20 by notches, whereby thelugs projecting'from said lower neck portion may pass through said notches and the two sets oflugs may be engaged on their adjacent surfaces. 2. A pump construction of the character described, adapted to besecured within the fillingopening of a closed liquid container,
comprising a pump having a neck portion adapted to be disposed upon the exterior of said container, a discharge spout member rextending laterally from said neck portion, a pump cylinder mounted upon one end of said neck portion, a liquid discharge pipe connected to the lower opposite end of said neck portion and adapted to extend in close prox imity to the bottom of said container, a phirality of spaced lugs projecting from the pe-- riphery of said lower neck portion, a bush ing for releasably interlocking said pump with said container, said bushing being pro- Vided with means for connection within said filling opening and also provided with a socket adapted to receive said lower neck portion, and a plurality of undercut lugs mounted upon said bushing and separated by notches, whereby the lugs projecting from said lower neck portion may pass through said notches and the two sets of lugs may be engaged on their adjacent surfaces, said neck portion provided with an air chamber offering a passageway between said pipe in the interior of said container and said spout upon the exterior of said container, and also provided with an air passageway communicating between said cylinder and the interior of said container.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ALFRED G. ANDREASEN.
