Be it known that I, ROY.HERBERT BLACK residing at Tulsa, in the county of, Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paste-Discharging Presses, of which the following is a specificatlon,
This invention relates to presses, particularly to those of the pneumatic type, and has for its object the provision of a press by means of which a thick paste of material such as for instance, asbestos and water, may be forced into a desired position, the device being particularly adapted for use in filling molds disposed about pipe fittings and the like, the particular adaptation of the device being clearly disclosed in my companion application.
An important object is the provision of a press of this character which is so constructed as to prevent the passage of any EtHPaSl) the piston head so that the formation of any air channels or bubbles in a mass of paste while it is being forced into a mold, will'be prevented.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which is provided with means whereby the expressing plunger may be quickly and easily returned to its initial position and also provided W1th means whereby any residual compressed air remaining behind'the plunger may be relieved. Another object is the provision of a device of this character which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive in manufacture, which may be quickly operated, and which will be durable and efiicient in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure'l is a side elevationof my device, Fig.2 is a longitudinal sectional v1ew therethrough, and f Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
, Referring more particularly to the drawing, my press is shown as comprising a cylindrical casing 10 which is open at its upper end and which is closed at its lowerend except that the lower end is provided with a central opening and a neck surrounding the opening, and upon which is provided a Specification of Letters Patent.

Secured centrally upon the top of the cap 12 is a cut oil valve 17 from which extends a flexible tube 18 terminating in a discharge nozzle 19 which is adapted for connection with a hole in a mold or the like which it is desired to fill with lastic material.
Slidable within to casing 10 is-a piston cpmprlsing a member 20 having a hub port1on 21 upon which is secured a ring member 22 provided at its and which is also provided with openings 23. The hub portion 21 is provided centrally with a threaded opening within which is engaged the threaded upper end of a hollow piston rod 24 carrying at its lower end a stirrup 25 engageable by the foot of the operator. The member 20 is of less diameter than the internal diameter of the casing 10 and has disposed thereon a" rubber flanges extending downwardly below the ring member 22.
The member 20 has .formed centrally on its upper side an exten-. .sion 27 upon which is disposed a disk memouter periphery with an expansrble ac'klng ring cup 26 which .has side side flanges extending upwardly and within I which is disposed a disk 32. When the piston is in its lowered position,
the casing 10 may be filled with the plastic material to be used by removing the cap 12 and pouring the material into the casing.
In order that the piston may be moved upwardly for discharging the material'from the casing 10, I provide a pipe 36 which extends along the side of the casing 10 and which has its lower end extending into the bottom of the casing 10, as shown at 37, and which has its upper end connected with a pipe 38 and also with a cock 39. Disposed in the pipe 38 is a; check valve 39 and a cut-off valve 40 and the lower end of the pipe 38 is adapted to have engaged thereon a pipe or tube leading from any source of compressed air which may in some instances be merely a hand pump such as a tire pump.
In the use of the device, after the piston is moved downwardly and the casing filled with plastic material and the cap 12 replaced in position, a compressed air supply pipe connected with the pipe 38 forces air into the bottom of the casing 10, the check valve 39 preventing back pressure or back flow and the cut-off valve 40 enabling the air to be discontinued when desired. When the compressed air enters the bottom of the casing 10 and sufficient pressure accumulates, the compressed air will enter the openings 23 in the ring member 22 and force the rubber cup 26 outwardly into very close engagement with the inner wall of the casing so as to make a tight joint. As the pressure increases below the piston the piston will be moved upwardly and the plastic material above the piston will be forced out through the pipe 18 and discharge nozzle 19 into the desired location. At any time the discharge of material may be cut off by closing the valve 17. It will be noted that in the event that any air should find its Way past the rubber cup 26 this air will pass into the space between the disks 28 and 30 and will pass into the passages 35 and bore 34 in the member 20 and pass out through the hollow piston rod :24. In this way it will be seen that it is impossible for any air escaping beyond the cup 26 to get into the mass of plastic material, and the formation of any air channels will be consequently prevented. After the material has been pressed out the exhaust valve 39 is bpened to permit the compressed air below the piston to escape, after which the operator may return the piston to normal position.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form,
construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim I 1. A device of the character described comprising a cylindrical casing open at its upper end, a detachable cap for closing the upper end of said casing, a valved discharge pipe leading from said cap, a piston slidable within said cylinder and-comprising a member having formed on its underside a hub portion and having formed on its upper side a central extension, said hub ortion being provided with a threaded soc et, and said member being provided with a bore communicating with the upper end of said socket, and said extension being provided with a continuation of said bore having lateral branches, a hollow piston rod slidabl through the bottom of said casing and threaded Within said socket, an inverted resilient cup disposed upon said member, a disk disposed upon said extension and engaging upon said cup, lugs on the upper side of said disk, a second disk disposed upon said lugs and defining with said first named disk a space communicating with said lateral branches, a cup washer disposed upon said second named disk, a disk disposed upon said cup washer, a nut threaded upon the upper extremity of said extension and engaging said last named disk, a ring member engaged upon said hub member and spaced relatively below said first named member and provided with openings, and a compressed air conducting pipe leading into said casing below said piston.
2. A device of the character described comprising a casing, a detachable cap forming a closure for the top thereof, a valved discharge pipe leading from said cap, a piston slidable within said casing and provided intermediate its ends with an opening extending to the center thereof, an inverted resilient cup at the lower portion of said piston, a cup washer at the upper portion of said piston, a hollow piston rod connected with said piston, extending through the bottom of the casing, and communicating with said opening, and means for supplyin compressed air into said casing below said piston.
3. A device of the character described comprising a casing, a detachable cap there for, a valved discharge pipe leading from said cap, a piston slidable within said casing and provided at its upper and lower portions with a cup washer and inverted cup respectively, said piston being provided between said washer and cup with an annular opening extending to the center of the piston, a hollow piston rod connected with said piston, extending downwardly through the bottom of the casing, and communicating with said annular opening, a valved compressed air inlet pipe leading into the casing below said piston, and means for permitting the exhaust of compressed air below said piston.
