SHIPPING DRUM Filed Jari. 27, 1932 Patented Apr. 25, 1933 EDGAR n; sHANon, or
SHARON, FENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE PETROLEUM SHIPPING DRUM yApplication ledplanuary 27, 1932. Serial No. 589,248.
The invention is addressed to drums or receptacles mainly intended for shipping and storing petroleum products, of the nature of oil and the like, and having dispens ing openings initally sealed by a friction cap or expanded closure. The friction cap is advantageous particularly in the case of receptacles having relatively thin walls and because it is substantiallyv tamperproof. However, openings so sealed suffer the disn advantage that ordinarily they afford insufficient support or anchorage for faucets, nozzles. pumps and the like connections available to the user to remove the contents of the drum. And so the object of this Iinvention is to provide an adapter for the openings of thin wall drums which shallbe of simple and inexpensive constructionincluding a standard screw threaded fitting which effectively will support the .discharge connection in leakproof relation with the drum.
The nature, characteristic scope of the invention more readily will'be understood from the following detailed description taken Iin connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, wherein v Figure l is a fragmentary topview of, for examplea drum head having an opening equipped with an adapter.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the adapter locked in position in leakproof relation with the drum opening and read;T for the application of a dispensing connection.
Fig. 3 is a top View of the locking ring, Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same locking ring.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the assembly with a modified form of locking ring.
Figs. 6 and 7 are, respectively, top and edge views of the modified locking ring shown in Fig. 5.
The head or other wall 5 of a metal barrel or drum of relatively thin wall section has an opening G whereof the defining wall 7 is interiorly directed and terminates in a head 8. Initially the opening is closed or features and sealed by a friction cap, (not shown), whose crown portion is expanded over the bead ..8 and whose skirt is. expanded exteriorly of the drum. The opening 6 may be circular, elliptical, square, hexagonal or of any other form. The preferred form is elliptical and it is so shown. y, l,
The adapter is a tool comprising a tubular boss or ring shape element 9 of asize such as readily to admit of its penetrating the opening 6 with ample clearance between its outside diameter andthe defining wall 7 of the opening.y Interiorly `and exteriorly the element 9 is provided with standard screw threads, the threaded bore 'serving to receive the threaded nipple lof a faucet, noz- Zle, pump, or any other available connection for dispensing the contents of the pump, and the external threaded portion serving to. accommodate means for securing the adapter rigidly with relation to the openf ing of the drum. The adapter is providedV withan annular flange or collar 10 which cooperates witha gasket 11 to seat the adapter in leakproof relation with the outside marginal wall of the opening. Arms 12 extending radially of the collar, when present, serve as handles for manipulating the adapter. 13 is a locking ring adapted for screw threaded engagement with the external wall of the boss and of size to bear against and be arrestedby the bead or innerl wall 8 of the opening. Hence, as shown in Fig. 3, it is elliptical in order that it may be passed through the opening. Locking ring 13 has, on its upper face, opposed lugs or projections 14 which serve as cams, whenv the ring is screwed to place, to engage with friction the lesser dimension of the defining wall 7 of the drum opening. A taperpin 15 lodged in thefitting serves to prevent casual displacement of the locking ring.`
When the parts are locked in the manner stated, there is no lost motion and the adapter oriittingl is in rigid and leakproof relation with the` drum opening and ready for the reception into its fluidway or screw threaded bore of a hose connection or other means for dispensing' theV contents of the 'umap K adapter.
Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the locking ring 16, Figs. 6 and 7 is formed or provided with cam faces 17 and 18 which impinge and exert upward thrust upon, for example, the bead 8, whereupon it may be secured against casual displacement by a keeper or taper pin 19 which penetrates the ring and impinges against the outer wall of the boss.
As stated at the outset, the opening to which the adapter is applied may be of circular, elliptical, square, hexagonal, etc. shape. It conveniently, cheaply and effectively may be closed or sealed initially by a friction cap expanded over the inner and outer rim walls of the opening and eventually removed, as by reaming or puncturing, in order to admit the fiuidway or conduit element of the The latter, through the medium of its internally screw threaded area affords efficient support and anchorage for a faucet, pump, hose connection or other means of dispensing. Evidently, then, the described adapter is a highly efficient tool which, in conjunction with the friction cap type of closure for an elliptical or other special opening, may Well dispense with standard threaded rings and plugs now in use on barrels and drums, and withal makes for an assembly that is substantially tamperproof.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is 1. The combination with a receptacle wall having an opening whereof the defining wall is directed inside the receptacle, of means for adapting the opening to standard discharge fittings and including a fluidway freely insertible in the opening, and an elliptical locking ring admissible through the opening and adjustable on the fluidway to take a binding fit on the defining wall of the opening.
2. The combination with a receptacle wall having an opening whereof the defining 'wall is directed inside the receptacle, of
means for adapting the opening to standard discharge fittings and including a fluidway freely insertible in vthe opening, an elliptical locking ring admissible through the opening and adjustable on the fiuidway t0 take a binding fit on the defining wall of the opening, and means for securing the locking ring in its locked position.
3. The combination with a receptacle wall having an opening whose defining Wall is differentially spaced from a common center, of an adapter including an internally and externally threaded conduit portion freely insertible in the opening and having an ex* ternal fianee or collar whereby it may be seated in lealrproof relation externally of the opening, and a locking ring applicable to the external wall of the conduit and hav ing adimension suhicient to lap the inner rim wall of the opening and having cam
