This invention relates to revolving doors, and comprehends an improved means for controlling the speed of rotation of the door so as to prevent turning of the same above a predetermined maximum, thereby avoiding spinning of the door and the disadvantages resulting therefrom.
The present invention broadly aims to provide a hydraulic speed regulator for revolving doors, in which use is made of the retarding action of the flow of oil or an equivalent incompressible fluid through a passage and against a part movable by the door to control the speed of rotation thereof.
More particularly, the invention resides in a hydraulic speed regulator for revolving doors, in which a reciprocatory means operatively connected with and actuated by the revolving door is employed for displacing an incompressible fluid which sets up a retarding action upon the speed of rotation of the door when said speed reaches a predetermined maximum, the invention further residing in means for regulating the speed of displacement so that the maximum speed of rotation of the door may be varied.
The invention further resides in'the provision of a hydraulic speed regulator or controller for revolving doors, by virtue of which the revolving speed is continuously under control and the retarding force gradually increased as attempts are made to spin the door.
As a further feature, the invention embodies in a hydraulic speed regulator or controller for revolving doors, having reciprodoor at any possible speed, is smoothly increased or decreased, thus avoiding intermittent functioning of the door.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, A designates the wings of a revolving door which are carried b the central support B extending upwar y therefrom, and which central support is secured to a bearing C which bears upon an overhead support D, with respect to which the cen tral support and bearing C are adapted to rotate.
In the present instance, the overhead support D is fashioned to provide a closed casing 5 provided with a pair of spaced cylinder portions 6 and 7, each having a closed end 8 and an open end which communicates with the casing 5 A by-pass or conduit 9 establishes communication between the cylinder portions 6 and 7 adjacent the outer closed ends thereof, and said by-pass is formed with any suitable means 10 for regulating the effective size of the by-pass or conduit. As illustrated in the present instance, the means 10 includes a plug 11 intersecting the by-pass 9 and formed with an aperture 12 coinciding with the bore of. the by-pass. The plug 11 is provided with an axially threaded bore 13 which intersects the aperture 12, and a screw 14 is adjusted in the threaded bore to regulate the eflfective size of the aperture 12. A piston or plunger 15 is mounted for reciprocatory movement with in each of the cylinders 6 and 7, and each piston is connected by a connecting rod 16 with a crank 17, the said cranks 17 being respectively formed on crank shafts 18 and 19 which are journaled for rotation on axes parallel to the central support B, which shafts project upwardly through and above the casing 5 and .have secured thereto pinions 20 and 21. The bearing C is fashioned to provide a gear 22 which meshes at substantlally diametrically opposite points with the pinions 20 and 21 so that turning movement of the central support B imparts turning motion to the pinions 20 and: 21, their shafts 18 and 19, and hence through the cranks 17 and connecting rodsl'6, effects simultaneous reciprocations of the piston 15 in opposite directions within the cylinders 6 and 7. y In operation, the revolving of the door sets up reciprocations of the pistons 15 simultaneously in opposite directions to move the .fluid through the by-pass 9 and aperture 12 alternately in opposite directions corre sponding with the movement of the pistons 15 in the cylinders 6 and 7. Obviously, this offers some resistance to the turning of the door at all times, but it is ap arent that due to the restricted size of the. y-pass, the resistance gradually increases with the speed of rotation of the door so that the device in eifect operates to prevent turning of the door above a predetermined maximum speed,
which may obviously be varied by the adjustment of the screw 14. The device also acts to positively preclude spinning of the door and brings the same to a stop more readily after the same is relieved of its moving force. In other words, through the medium of-the device thus described, users of the door are forced to turn the same at a more nearly uniform speed after the initial inertia has been overcome and are positively 'whichwould have the eifect of rendering the door jerky in its movement. By virtue of the complete filling of the casing with the fluid scribed a single and preferred embodiment v of the invention, no limitation is intended to the precise structural details hereln exhibited, as it is to be clearly understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to when desired.
What is claimed is: Q
1. In combination, a revolving door and a hydraulic speed regulator therefor including an overhead support for the doonfashioned to provide a closed casing filled with an incompressible fluid, means operable by rotation of the door for-moving the fluid in opposite directions within said casing and means intercepting the movement of the liquid to prevent its movement beyond a predetermined maximum whereby to limit the speed of rotation of the door.
2. In combination, a revolvin door and a hydraulic speed regulator there or including an overhead support for the door fashioned to provide a closed casing filled with an imcompressible fluid, means operable by rotation of the door for moving the fluid in opposite directions within said casing and means intercepting the movement of the liquid to prevent its movement beyond a predetermined maximum whereby to limit the speed of rotation of the door, said intercepting means being adjustable to vary the maximum rate.
3. In combination, a revolving door and a hydraulic speed regulator therefor including an overhead support for the door fashioned to provide a closed casing filled with anfincompressible fluid, means operatively connected with the revolving door for displacing the fluid and means for regulating the speed of displacement ofsaid fluidv by said first means.

The combination with a revolving door, of a combined speed controlling device and support for said door including a member defining a bearing for the door and forming a pair of spaced cylinders each having a closed end and an open end, a closed casing with which the open ends of the cylinders communicate, a by-pass establishing communication between the cylinders adjacent the closed ends, a pair of pistons mounted and connected for reciprocations simultaneously in opposite directions within said cylinders and an operative connection between said pistons and the door for efiecting reciprocation of the pistons upon rotation of the door.
9. The combination with a revolving door,
of a combined speed controlling device and end and an' open end, the open ends of the cylinders communicating with the casing and a by-pass portion establishing communication between the cylinder portions adjacent their closed ends, a piston mounted to reciprocate in each cylinder, crank shafts to which the pistons are connected, gearmg coupling the spindle bearing member and crank shaft for actuating the pistons upon rotation of the spindle and an incompressible fluid completely filling the casing HARRY MUNSGN.
