Description

April 33. D. J. KELMAN 1,904,470
WREATH AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME Filed Ndv. 18. 1951 Patented Apr. 18, 1933 UNITED STATES PATEN DAVID J. KELMAN, or BnooKLYnnnw 03 I WREATH AND METHon ,OFMAIKYING sAME Application filed November s, 1931. serial no. 575,704.
This invention relates to wreaths and the methods of making the same. It is directed, for example, to wreaths such as used for Christmas decoration and comprising an an- 5 nular core, having a covering therein, it being an object of my invention to provide an improved covering for the wreath, made of one or more strands, each composed of rayon, cotton, floss or cellophane fibers, and wound about the core to completely cover and ornament the same. In accordance with my invention the separate strands are bunched together and wound about a common spool. The bunched strands are then unwound from the spool and wound about the wreath to form a ribbon-like strip during the winding operation producing a highly attractive coating or cover for the wreath.
A further object of the invention is to provide an economical, simple and efficient method of making a highly attractive, rugged and practical Christmas wreath of the char: acter described.
Other objects of thisinvention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, combinations of elements, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible embodi- 59 Christmas wreath comprising a core 10a and a coating orcovering 11. The core 10amay be made of anannu'lar pieceof cardboard '12 of seml-clrcular cross-section, and a flat an nular ring 13 made of cardboard and attached to-the edgesof the ring 12 in any suitable manner. The coating'll may be made of a plurality'of bunched strands 15a of rayon, cotton, fioss,"c'ellop'hane or the like fibers of desiredcolor, -wound about the core.
The method of making the'gwreath 10 ina cordance with my inventiomwill now be de scribedpf" v g A number of spools 15 onfeachof which is wound a single strand 15amade upof bunched fibers, are rotatably mounted on pins 7 16 extending {P011121 support I The strand or cord-15a is preferablymade of untwi sted fibers; that is a number of fibers are merely bunched together to form each strand. 2F or this purpose, rayon Orthel ike artificial fiber 79 is. used, since the extremely long fibers are preferable. The ends of "thestrands' are placed together and wound about a spool 18 which is rotated on a shaft 19 by a motor (not shown) or in any'othersuitable "manner. During the 1 winding of the spool 18 the strands 15a are preferably held together "by hand or in any other suitable manner, so that all the strands, preferably eight in 'nu mber,
are wound together on the isp'ool' 18. "In I.
winding the strands 150011 'spo'ol'18, 'it will be noted that said strands are not twisted'fbut merely bunched together.
The composite bunched strand 20 on the spool 18 is thereafter wound about the core w 10a in any suitable manner, preferably in the manner and with the apparatus illustrated in my co-pending application, Serial No. 575, 705 filed the 18th day of November, 1931. As
the composite strand 2O isunwound from the spool 18 and wound on the core 10a, said composite strand forms a ribbon-like member and 1 becomes flattened against the core. Since the fibers of the individual strands 150; are not twisted, and since the strands 15a are not twisted when winding the same on the spool 18, the strand 20 unwinds like a ribbon with the strands 15a substantially disposed side byside' and flattens against the core, thus producing a highly attractive, practical and eflicient cover for the core. Thus a simple and cheap ribbon-like member whih makes a highly attractive substantially sheet-like cover having a sheen, is obtained for winding about the core without the necessity for weaving operation to produce the ribbon. The ribbon-like strand 20 covers a substantial widthiof the core in each turn thereof about said core, thus decreasing the number of turns necessary for entirely covering the core.
Obviously, after the strand 20 is completely i wound about the core, the end thereof is tied or tucked in to prevent unravelling.
Y use. H I 7 7 r ,As various possible embodiments might be URI It will thus be seen that there is provided I a device inwhich the several objects of this invention are: achieved, and which is well 1 adapted to meet the conditions of practical made of theabove invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above setforth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth orv shown in the accompanylng drawing, 1S. to be lnterpreted as illustratlve and not in a limlting sense.
Having thus described. my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent e v 1. The method ofmaking a Wreath consisting in bunching a plurality of strands and winding the same onto a single spool, and
then unwinding said bunched strands from said spool and winding the same around an annular core to completely cover the same.
.2. A wreath comprising a'core and a covering therefor comprisinga strand made of elongated and untwisted rayon fibers.
,A wreath. comprising an annular core and covering therefor comprising a plurality of strands [wound around said core, each strand comprising a plurality of untwisted and elongated fibers. i
1 4. The method of covering an annular core to v make a wreath consisting in winding a strand composed of a plurality of bunched untwisted' fibers, continuously around said core..
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
