RINGLET.
APPLICATION FILED 1MAY 12, 1921.-

LOUIS LEVUSSOVE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
RINGIIET- Application filed May 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS Lnvussovn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ring-lets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Heretofore ringlet hair has been manufactured and furnished to the trade. Ringlet hair, or for brevity, ringlets are used for making up other articles, being combed out and otherwise worked for producing the desired articles. The ringlets comprise a means of supplying curled hair to the trade not being intended for use without alteration; Ringlets as heretofore supplied the trade have been in longitudinal coils with the root and point ends both exposed. The points as a consequence have become snarled, uncurled and damaged resulting in much annoyance, loss of hair and depreciation in value and appearance.
This invention has for its objects to provide a ringlet which will better hold the curl to protect the curled ends of the ringlet; to thus obtain a ringlet which may be made up by the customer with less combing and less waste; to provide a ringlet which will reach the customer smooth and tightly coiled; to avoid pulling out the smaller or point end of the curl in matching the hair; to pro vide an improved and efficient method of manufacture; to secure simplicity in the manufacture and attractiveness of construc tion, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ringlet manufactured in accordance with my invention; and
Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 illustrate successive steps in the manufacture of said ringlet.
In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawing, the refer ence numeral 1 indicates in general the ringlet. As shown in Figure 1 this ringlet preferably is manufactured so as to provide a curl or coil of hair 2 next the root end of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1'7, 1922.

the ringlet which it is customary to tie as at 3. The other ends of the hair, or points,
which normally forms the smaller or free end of the curl or ringlet is arranged in a transverse coil 4. This transverse coil 4 and the longitudinal coil 2 are both integral being formed from the same strands of the hair. The points or normally free ends of the hair are contained within the transverse coil 4, and are thereby protected in the handling of the hair and will maintain the curl therein upon receipt of the ringlet by the customer, firmer and more lasting than rinlet hair which has been heretofore manufactured. Normally the points as heretofore manufactured are exposed, the ends becoming tangled and the curl becoming less and thus making the hair less attractive and less valuable. By the present invention I overcome this difficulty by protecting the points within the transverse coil 4. The coil 4 is upon its exterior composed of continuous strands of hair which form an ample shelter for the points within and obviously will maintain the smooth appearance and will not be disturbed very readily.
By my improved construction the hair is further protected in that the coil 2 will be the only part which is opened at all during the process of matching the hair, and this is very advantageous in that this handling and matching of the hair will have no ill effects on the points which continue to be protected within the undisturbed coil 4:.
My invention also contemplates the method by which the ringlet is produced as above described. The hair is first applied to a mandrel 5, and wound upon it as illustrated in Figure 2. In winding the hair upon the mandrel the points are placed upon the mandrel first and the remaining hair is then wound around it. The points of the hair are accordingly placed inside of the coil at the very outset and obtain the protection of the remainin portion of the hair from the very start. After the hair is thus wound upon the mandrel it is suitably wrapped or tied, see Figure 3, and treated. It is not believed necessary to include herein the various steps in the treatment of the hair while it is so wrapped but suflice it to say that the treatment results in the hair receiving a substantially permanent curl so that when it drawn off of the mandrel the tendency of it will be to curl up again. Upon the comple verse coil 4}.
the operator twisting it as it is drawn otf.'
The amount which the hair is withdrawn at this time represents the amount of hair which is required to make the longitudinal coil 2.
The portion of the hair which remains upon the mandrel is for forming the transhis portion of the hair is not removed by unrolling as in the case of the first portion of the hair, instead, the mandrel 5 is slid out from the coil as illustrated in Figure 5. This leaves the coil of the hair l just as it was wound upon the mandrel with the points inside and entirely undisturbed. After the hair is tied at its roots, as at 3, the same is ready for the buyer.
Obviously detail changes in the manufacture and construction of my improved ringlet may be made in practice without (1813211127 ing from the spirit or scope of the invention and I donot wish to be understood as restricting myself to the exact construction or the precise steps in its manufacture except as set forth in the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
Ilaving thus described my invention, olaim:-- r
1. A ringlet comprising a longitudinal coil and a transverse coil at one end of the longitudinal coil integral therewith.
'2. A ringlet comprising transverse coils having the points Of the ringlet protected within one of the coils. I
3. The herein described method of manufacturing ringlets comprising winding the hair upon amandrel and unwinding a p0rtion from the mandrel andsliding the mandrel from within the. remaining'portion' of the coil.
4:. The herein described method of manufacturing ringlets comprising winding the iair upon a mandrel, treating the hair for producing permanent curl, unwinding a portion of the hair, and sliding the mandrel from within the remaining portion of the hair.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
LOUIS LEvnssovE.
