STRAIGHT LIFT BEAM HANGER FOR OIL WELL PUMPING RIGS Filed June 24, 1932 Patented Mar. 28, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
GARL EUBIT, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA.
STRAIGHT LIFT BEAM HANGER FOR OIL WELL PUMIBING RIGS Application filed June 24, 1932. Serial No. 619,150.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in straight lift beam hanger for oil well pumping rigs.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a straight lift beam hanger for oil pumping rigs wherein a frame structure comprised of pivotally connected link members assembled in trapezium formation is interposed between the pumping end of a walking beam and the upper end of a polish lifted and lowered in a manner for eliminating side wear on the polish rod and gland or stufling box through which therod moves that would otherwise be caused by'the are described by the pumping end of the walking beam.
A further object of the invention is to provide a straight lift beam hanger for oil well pumping rigs of the foregoing character wherein the link frame construction is pivotally supported upon the pumping end of a walking beam while the clamp member that is engaged with the upper end of the polish rod is shiftably and pivotally supported upon the lower link member of the link frame permitting relatively freemovement between the links forming the frame of trapezium form whereby the polish rod is raised and lowered in a true vertical line and side movement-thereof resultlng 1n wear on the stufling box and crystallization of the walking beam and the upper end of the polish rod, and illustrating by dotted lines positions assumed by the link frame during movements of the walking beam; I Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the lower link member of the link frame showing the rack support for the pol- I ish rod clamp; and
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the lower link member of the link frame.
Referring more in detail to the accom anying drawing, the reference numeral 5 esignates a standard that pivotally sup orts at its upper end as at 6, a walking eam 7 having'the end 8 thereof engaged with operating devices therefor and its pumping end 9 connected to the polish rod 10.
The operating means for the walking beam I 7 includes a counter-balanced drive wheel 11 mounted upon a supporting frame 12 driven in any appropriate manner with a link rod connection 13 between the wheel 11 and end 8 of the walking beam.
During operation of the walking beam 7, the end 9 thereof describes an arc and to compensate for the changes in position of the pumping end 9 of the walking beam relative to the polish rod 10 and to permit the latter to be raised and lowered in the absence of side movement, a link frame structure is interposed between the pumping end of the Walking beam and the upper end of the polish rod. The link frame structure is of trapezium form and includes an upper link 14 comprising a pair of side bars 15 with a hanger block 16 interposed therebetween and pivotally supported as at 17 upon the pumping end 9 of the walking .beam. The lower link member 18 of the link frame structure comprises a pair of spaced parallel side bars 19 of greater length than the side bars 15 of the upper link member, the side bars 19 being connected together by a pair of spaced angle brackets 20 as shown in Figure 3. The ends of the link members 14 and 18 are. connected by the vertical link rods 21 and 22 by means of pivot pins 23 extending between the side bars of the link members 14 and 18, the link rod 22 being of a length greater than the length of the link rod-21 so that the link frame structure is of trapezium form as illustrated in Figure 1.
The block 16 that supports the link framev structure upon the pumping end 9 of the walking beam 7 is disposed nearer the link rod 21 than the link rod 22 and the support for the upper end of the polish rod 10 is mounted upon the lower link member 18 adjacent the link rod 21. The support for the polish rod includes a block 24 secured as at 25 to the upper edge of each side bar 19, being transversely aligned and located between the angle brackets 20, the upper face of each block 24 having spaced sockets 26 therein as illustrated with the sockets of the spaced blocks transversely aligned. The polish rod 10 is engaged at its upper end by a clamp 27 that carries diametrically opposite bearing pins 28 that are selectively received in the transversely aligned sockets 26 as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, it being noted that during pivotal movement of the walking beam 7, the link frame structure of trapezium form assumes the positions illustrated by dotted lines in Figure 1 to compensate for the are described by the pumping end 9 of the walking beam so that the polish rod 10 moves up and down in a true vertical line with all side movements thereof eliminated. WVith the polish rod directly engaged with the pumping end of the walking beam as heretofore practiced, there is considerable side movement imparted to the polish rod in addition to the up and down movement thereof which results in binding engagement between the polish rod and stuffing box through which the same slides, this action soon resulting in crystallization of the rod and breakage thereby causing inconvenience and expense as well as loss of time in repair and replacement work. With the present apparatus embodying the link frame structure pivotally carried by the pumping end of the walking beam and with which the upper end of the polish rod 10 is engaged, all side movement of the polish rod is eliminated and wear on the polish rod in the normal operation thereof is thereby reduced to a minimum.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
