Application'filed'llarch21,1932. Serial No. 600,330. 7 f 1 This invention relates to abrading, polishing or like surfacing tools, and has more particular reference to an improved device for holding sheets of abrasive, polishing or like material so that the same may be conveniently and effectively employed in abrading, polishing or otherwise finishing surfaces.
An object of the invention is to provide a holder of the above kind which is extremely simple and durable in construction and eflicient in use. a V 7 Another object of the invention is to pro vide a holder of the above kind which may be conveniently manipulated by which the sheet of finishing material may be securely held in proper condition for use. and which will permit the ready application or removal of the sheet of polishing material for renewal from time to t me as found necessary. Other objects and features .of the invention will become apparent from the following description when considered 'in'connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspectiveview'of a tool embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof! Figure 3 is a transverse section on line 38 ofFigure2;and-
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the'body l'thhh tl" 'd.h d. e OfPt'he too W1 t e 8 e8 ampmg 111;: the latter in place between'the'wingsfi} and said lower: portions of the members 11.-
grip forming members removed.
Referring more in detail to the drawing,
the tool shown may be convenientlymade of stamped metal and consists of a body memher 5 formed from a single sheet of metal, centrally folded upon itself and having its free end portions directed laterally in opposite directions'to form co-planar wings 6.
Disposed against and covering the under surfaces of the wings 6 isabase plate! hav ng its margin tightly folded over and upon the marginal edge portions of the wings 6 to securely fasten the base plate 7 to the latter and to form a support for the sheet of abrad ing, polishing or like material 8. V
The fold of the sheet from which the body 5 is formed has the intermediate portion thereof cut away'as at 9, and the end portions tates the ready apPlicationof a sheet" 8 to a of the fold which are-left are given formation to formhingebarrelslO. I
Oppositely facingsubstantially" S-shaped; clamping and handigrip forming members 11 are hinged to and arranged at opposite 5 sides of the body 5, the upper "edges" of said members 11 being formed with interfitting hinge barrels l2 to'jreceive a hinge pin 13' which also passes through the hinge barrels 10. It will be'seenthatthe upper outwardly ii curved portions of the members 11 cooperate to form a rounded handgrip; while the lower outwardly directed portions of said members 11 arearranged to overlie the wings 1 6 when the members lllare swung down-' 5 wardly to the full line operative position of Figures 1 to 3 inclusive Thus,.when the sheet of abrading, polishing'or likematerial 1 8 is arranged against the under side of the" aplate 7 and has its side edge portions folded l over upon the wings 6, the lower portions of the members 11 will tightly grip said folded over edges of the sheet 8 with a force propor-' tional to the tightness with which the members 11 are gripped at their upper portions;
In other Words,- when the upper portions of the members 11 are gripped tightly, said members are forced toswing downwardly and inwardly'toward each otherlwith their! 89 lower portions engaging t-hefoldedover edge portions of the sheet 8 and securely clamp-" The hinge pin 13 has'frictional engagement in the'barrels 12. of the members llr-and one end of the pin 13 :projjects beyond the! adjacent endofthe body 5Qandis formed with-9 I V V a finger loop or handle 14.) Thus,:by swing-t wardly and upwardly to release the adjacent edge portion of the-sheet 8, w hile the other edge portion of thesh eeth8= may be ,releafsedl'f by swinging the handlepr loop 14 .intheop posite direction. This arrangement. facilithe tool proper. orinstanc'e, assumingithatr a new sheet isbeing applied; and thatonfe' of the members llhas been raised as indicated f by dotted unegm Figure 1, an 'edge ofthe 40 I ing the tool without departing from the sheet may be folded-upon the wing 6 at the side of the tool where the raised member 11 is located. The handle or loop 14 may then be swung in a direction to lower this member 11 which, has been initially raised so as to bring it into gripping engagement with the folded over edge of the sheetS, and to sin1ul-- taneously swing the other member 11 outwardly and upwardly. The folded over edge portion of the sheet 8 is thus gripped, and
" the" opposite member ll is raised so that'the other edge portion of the sheet 8 may be fol ded conveniently to be subsequently held by manual movement of the second member 11 downwardly and inwardly tooperative position. The frictional engagement of pin 123 permits slippageithereof relative to the hinge barrels 12 so that either member 11 may "be moved to raisedfor released position while tlie other member '11 remains stationary, said other member 11 being prevented from movementby its engagement with the base of the tool or the adJacentufOlded over edge of the sheet 8.1 However, when both members 11 are brought 1nto gripping engagement with the folded over edges of the sheet 8, they may rubbingfthe surface to be abraded, polished. or OtlIGI'WISB finished with the under surfacebe gripped and moved relatively toward each other .and relative to the pin, 13 to tightly hold the sheet 8 in place while the tool is in use. Obviously, atool of this kind is used by simply grasping the hand grip 'portionand of the sheet'8. V x
l Vlnle I have shown and described what I bOlIGVQEIt present to be the preferred embodinientof my invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that various changes maybe made in the details and manner'of constructf spirit-and scope ofthe invention as claimed.
*IVhat I claim as new is:
1.. A tool of the character described comprising a fiat base having a central upstand- "mg, body of rib-like form and adapted; to have the opposite edge portions of a sheet'of I rabrading,'polishing or like material folded cover and upon opposite side portions thereof,-
andjoppositely facing substantially S-shaped members hinged to the upper edge of said riblike body, said hinged members having up- I per portions cooperating to form a hand grip the opposite side portions ofthe basewhen 7 Y saidbody, and combined hand grip formingand; sheet clampingmembers arranged at pp- .posite sid esjof the body andprovi'dedwithi and lower portionsarranged to clamp the folded over edge portions of the sheet upon said members are gripped.
'2. A tool. of the character described com prisinga fiat base having a rigid upstanding body in the form of a rib, a hinge pinparallclwvith and ournaledgin the upper edge of hinge barrels at their upper edges frictionally receiving said hinge pin, said hinge pin having a projectlng end formed to provlde a handle for manipulating said members.
3. A tool of the character described comprising a body formed from a sheet of metal bent upon itself and having its ends directed laterally to form oppositely extending wings,
a base plate secured to and covering the under 'surfaces'of said wings, the fold of saidbody forming sheet beingcentrally cut away and 7 having the remaining end portions thereof shaped to form hinge barrels, substantially S-sh-aped sheet clamping and hand grip formingmembershaving hinge barrels on their upper edgesQanda hinge pin journaled in the hinge barrels of the body and frictionally engaging in the hinge barrels of said,
,members. V r 4. A tool of the character described comprising a body formed from a sheet of metal bent upon itself and-having its endsdirected I laterally to form oppositely extending wings, a base plate secured to and covering the under surfaces of saidwings, the fold of said body forming sheet being central-1y cut away and having the remaining end portions thereof shaped to form hinge barrels, substantial-.
ly S-shaped sheet clamping and hand grip forming members having hinge barrels on theirupper edges, and a hinge pin journaled in thehinge barrels of the body and frictionally engaging in the hinge barrels of said members. said hinge; pin projecting at one end of the body-and formed to provide a handle. r p r 5. A tool of the character described com" prising a base having a central longitudinal 'bers areyswung downwardly and inwardly into gripping engagement. with the folded over edge portions of a sheet applied to the under surfaceof the base.
