This invention also consists in certain other features of Gonstruction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illus- M trated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended c aims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in'which 7 Figure 1 is a sectlon on line 1-1 of Figure 2.

Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the casing my on the top of the fire box and with which the vertically arranged tubes communicate.
In these views, the numeral 1 indicates a diagonally arranged tube having its lower forward end welded to the front wall 2 of the fire box, with the open end of the tube in commumcation with the lower end of the boiler. The upper end of the tube is closed. A plurality of vertical tubes 3 have ir lower ends in communication with the tube 1 and their upper ends pass through wise fastened to said wall.

so as to facilitate the welding of the tubes 3 to said tube 1. A clean-out plug 10 may be placed above each tube 3 in the top of the casing to enable the tubes to be cleaned, though such plugs can be dispensed with as the intense circulation produced b the invention will tend to keep the tubes cc of scale.
By connecting the casing 6 with the plate 5, the parts of the invention can be assembled and connected together and then the plate placed in the opening in the wall 4 so that the invention can be readily attached to a boiler.
t From the foregoing it will be seen that the water from the lower part of the boiler win enter the tube 1 and then pass up through the tubes 3 into the casing 6 and 1t will then pass from the front end of the easing into the upper part of the boiler. The water in the tubes 1 and 3 will be intensely heated due to the fact that the tubes are located in the fire box directlylabove the fire. Thus the water will be quic y turned into steam and the steam, together with the water, will pass upwardly through the vertical tubes and into the casing. Attention is called to the fact that the steam and water is prevented from entering the steam space over the top of the fire box as the casing prevents this and causes the steam and water to pass with considerable velocity into the rear part of the boiler, where the casing discharges into the same. Then this. water, having given up its steam, will drop downwardly and again pass into the tube 1. As many of these units can be used as desired and according to the size of the boiler, Figure 1 showing two of the units in use.
Thus this invention adds to the heating surface of the fire box and insures an intensive circulation of the water in the boiler, which results in a considerable saving of 5 fuel. It also insures dryness of the steam as the casing prevents particles of water from penetrating into the steam space above the fire box. The formation of steam in the whole boiler will be very regular due to the intense circulation, which in turn, also results in eneration of dry steam.

What I claim is 1. In combination with a locomotive boiler having a fire box, a crown sheet and a throat sheet, a casing having its sides and rear end closed, and its forward end opened and extending longitudinally of said crown sheet above the same and terminating adjacent the forward end thereof, and a thermic siphon comprising a diagonally disposed tubular portion connected at its lower end to said throat sheet, and having a plurality of vertically arranged tubes extending from said tubular portion and arranged to open into said casing.
