W v if INVENTOR.
JO/M/ M GOOOH/l/V ATTORNEY I tor for a secondary JOHN 'M. GOODWIN', 0
Application filed August 8, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
FIREPLACE WATER BACK.
M. GOODWIN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county 5 and State of California,
and useful Improvements of have invented new San Francisco Fireplace ater Backs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water hacks for fire places and has the prov1s1on fire place, so that, the
of a boiler i beat for its primary object n the back of a generated by a heating medium positioned therein, may be utilized to heat a supply of water contained in the boiler to thereby to a boiling action pose of conveying Another object of generate of the water, for the pursteam due the said steam to a radiaheating purpose. this inventlon 1s to produce a boiler so constructed as to provide a greater heating area in the boiler; and to mo unt for the water contained on the said boiler conventional means for making the boiler safe and within the scope of city and state regulations.
A further object of this invention is to provide inlet and outlet means for supplying a quantity of water to the boiler and for therefrom, when so drawlng off a supply desired.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
Fig. 1 is a place showing Fig. 2 is a Fig. 3 is chimney showingproved boiler and In employ numeral 25.
the present inve a boiler designa This boiler construction a main body portion 26 and reduced lower portion 2(.
' aplurality of spaced face of the portion 27,
protuberances or extensions which is the purpose of in the boiler to have area so that by entering agr front elevation of an open firea boiler placed therein, sectional detail of a sectional view in side elevation my 1mits associated parts.
ntion, ted as a whole the a holler, through the I propose to embodies in its (11 On the front 28 are formed, allow the water eater circulating the protuberances it can be more quickly heated.
The boiler is prefer ably positioned near Serial No. 490,790.
,will present a greater heating surface to the logs or other means used as a heating medium. Adjacent the top of the boiler, I propose to insert an outlet 29 for supplying steam to a radiator. This outlet pipe can conveniently be inserted through the wall of the chimney and then connected to a conventional radiator, whereby a limited amount of heat can be generated when so desired.
Through the back wall of the chimney, propose to insert an inlet pipe 30 which will serve as a supply pipe for water to be conveyed to the boiler. Adjacent the lower extremity of the boiler a pipe 31 connected thereto serves as an outlet means for carrying ofl' water or an accumulation of that may fall to the bottom of the said boiler.
As shown to advantage in Figures 1 and 3, conventional attachments such as a water gauge 32, a compression gauge 33 and a safety exhaust valve 34. are attached either to the boiler or to the chimney casing, as desired.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim The combination with an open fire-place, of a boiler secured to the rear wall of the same, said boiler including an enlarged upper portion and a reduced lower portion, spaced protuberances formed in said boiler, said protuberances having vertical side portions and a horizontal base portion, said protuberances being staggered in relation to those next above, said protuberances being adapted to extend in said fire-place for the purpose of absorbing heat from a fire therein, inlet and outlet means connected to said boiler, and a steam outlet pipe connected to said boiler, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
