ROD
Filed Oct. 19 1951 3 HHH d/KTTORNEY Patented Mar. 14, 1933 UNITED STATES CALVIN H. WIMBERLEY, OF BRAUNFELSjTEXAS/- Application led October 19, 1931.
vide a rod of the character set forth, that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely eiiicient in operation and service.
rlhis invention also consists in certain other l5 features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating a rod constructed in accordance With the present invention and illustrates the manner of associating the links.
Fioure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of one of the links.
Referring to the drawing in detail the reference numeral 1 indicates a link Which is formed from a strip of relatively fiat thin material and is rectangular in formation, with a square cornered opening 2 disposed slightly beyond the transverse center of the body of the link as best shown in Figure 4.
Extending from one end of the body of 'the link and disposed centrally of said end is a barrel 3, While extending from the oppor site end and centrally thereof is a tongue 4 l extending in a plane parallel with the body as best shown in Figure 3. Arranged upon opposite sides of the tongue are barrels 5 and the barrels 5 are adapted to have disposed between the same a barrel 3 of a companion link as best shown in Figure l, and when the serial No.. '569;765.
barrels 5 ai'e'aligned with aibarrel Yofftlie companion lin-k, a pivot or `hingepin. i's disposed 'Within the aligned barrels for lling# edly connectinga Aplurality of links together:
IVhcn the links; are f pivotally; secured to- 55 get-bereit' will be apparent'- tha-t` they provide a flexible chain and tivo of these chains are associated by disposing the tongues 4 through the openings 2, with the links arranged in contacting engagement and when so associ- C@ ated, there is provided a rigid rod which may be utilized for any desired purpose.
By forming the rod as above set forth, it will be obvious that the length of the rod will depend upon the number of links used, C5 With the result any length rod may be made merely by adding or removing the links.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip* tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it` to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I cl-aim is:
1. A device comprising a pair of opposed chains including links, each provided With an opening, cooperating hinge barrels formed with the links, means passing through the cooperating hinge barrels to hingedly secure the links together, and tongues formed With the links and being arranged in the openings of -opposed links of the chains to secure the latter in contacting engagement with each other to provide a rigid rod.
2. A device comprising a pair of opposed chains each including substantially flat links having openings arranged therein, a single n hinge barrel disposed at one end of each link, 9' a pair of hinge barrels disposed at the opposite end thereof, the single hinge barrels being hingedly secured between the pairs of hinge barrels, and tongues formed with sai-d links and extending in a plane parallel there- With, and said tongues being arranged in the openings of oppos-e-d links of the chains to secure the latter in contacting engagement with each other to provide a rigid rod.
Cil
3. A device comprising a pair of opposed m0 CII chains including links, each being provided with a flat elongated body having an opening disposed to one side of the transverse center thereof, a. single hinge barrel extending centrally from one end of the body, a tongue extending centrally from the opposite end of the body in a plane parallel therewith a pair of hinge barrels formed with said body, with the barrels of the pair disposed upon opposite sides of the tongue,'saicl pairs of hinge barrels receiving the single barrels of companion links between the same for cooperation therewith, hinge pins arranged in the cooperating barrels for securing the links together, andv the tongues arranged in the openings of opposed links for engagement with the latter to secure the chains in contacting engagement with each other to provide a rigid rod.-
In testimon whereof I affix my signature.
C LVIN H. VVIMBERLEY.
