I UNITED STATES EDDIE c. nonens, or nLossoM, TEXAS.
FUNNEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1921.
Application filed May 7, 1920. Serial No. 379,618.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDDIE C. HODGES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blossom, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Funnels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to funnels and has for an object the provision of a funnel having a valve controlled outlet.
Another object is the provision of a novel form of valve for the funnel outlet, which is normally held in closed position by the novel arrangement of springs and is provided with means extending to the mouth of the funnel to open the valve and to permit of the escape of its contents.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a funnel constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4. is a sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the funnel comprises a body 10, which is preferably rectangular incross section so as to provide a fiat funnel which is tapered from its mouth to its base. The base of the funnel is flat and is provided with a restricted outlet opening 11, which has depending therefrom a tapered extension 12, the said opening 11 establishing communication between the interior of the tapered extension 12 and the body of the funnel.
Located within the funnel is a flat valve 13, the latter comprising a plate having its under surface provided with a suitable packing material 14, which when tightly pressed over the opening 11 will serve to prevent a leakage through the opening. The valve 13 is secured to the base of the funnel by means of spring hinge 15, the latter being located at one end of the valve, while mounted upon the opposite end of said valve is a coil spring 16. The spring 16 is disposed longitudinally of the body of the funnel and'has one end secured to the valve 13 and its opposite end secured to the base of the funnel as indicated at 17 By the arrangement of the spring hinge, 15 and the coil spring 16, the valve is held tightly over the opening 11, so that passage of the contents of the funnel through the opening is prevented.
In order to open the valve so as to permit of the escape of the contents of the funnel, there is provided a lever 18, which is pivotally mounted upon a bar 19 secured transversely of and adjacent to the mouth of the funnel. One end of this lever has connected thereto one end of a rod 20, the opposite end ofthe said rod being connected to a loop 21 which is carried by the valve 13. By operating the lever 18, the valve may be raised and held in raised position so as to permit of the passage of liquid or the like through the opening 11.
The funnel is equipped with a bail, by means of which it may be suspended. This bail comprises a plurality of links 22, which are connected to the funnel at the mouth thereof by means of ears 23. The handle 24 is secured to the outside of the funnel adj acent to the mouth and at one edge of the same.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the ap pended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A funnel comprising a tapered body having a restricted outlet, a flat valve positioned over said outlet, springs located at the opposite edges of the valve for normally holding the same in closed position and means connected to the valve and extending to the mouth of the funnel whereby the valve may be opened.
2. A funnel comprising a tapered body spring being disposed longitudinally of the having a restricted outlet, a flat valve posifunnel for normally holding the valve in tioned over said outlet, a spring hinge conclosed position and means connected to the 10 necting the valve to the funnel body, a coil valve and extending to the mouth of the 5 spring positioned upon the valve and havfunnel, whereby the valve may be opened.
