will enable others skilled in the art to which; it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a pulley and'rope guide, and has for its object to; pro vide a. device of this character which em bodies novel features of construction whereby the rope guides are "securely-held in proper position when-the pulley is in opera tion, although they can be readily removed from the pulley when such is desired.
Further objects of: the invention are to provide a pulley and rope guide which is comparatively simple andinexpensive in its construction, which will successfully with stand heavy strain without breakage, which will effectively remove all kinks from the rope or cable as it passes around'the sheave, and
which admits of the rope guides being readlly placed in position or removed therefrom without the use of any special'tool.
With these and other objects 1n vlew, the
-invention consists in certain novelcombin-a tions and arrangements of the parts as will} more fully, appear asthe description proceeds, the novel features thereof-being point ed out in the appended-claims.
For afull understandingof the invention, reference is to be had to the following-die scription and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pulley constructed in accordance with the invention, the guide membersbeing shown inoperative position by full lines, and by dottedlines as swung into the position assumed preparatory to disengaging the right hand guide mem{ her from the pulley frame.

The arms of the rope guides 15 extend along and are spaced from the opposite side plates of the pulley frame on the exterior thereof terminating at their upper ends in inwardly extending fingers 16 having the laterally projecting wings 17 at the extremities thereof. Thelower ends of the rope guides 15 carry the laterally projecting guide eyes 18, said eyes being adapted to be formed by a coil in the wire and serving to receive the rope 19 which passes. around the sheave 10. Key-hole slots are formed in the side plates 1 of the pulley frame at points toward opposite sides thereof, and the fingers 16 of the rope guides are adapted to be inserted through the keyhole slots or removed therefrom, when the rope guides are swung into proper position to bring the wings 17 of the fingers into registry with the narrow ends of the keyhole slots. These key-hole slots and wings 17 are arranged in such a manner that the rope guides 15 must be swung into an eX- treme position which would never be assumed during the normal operation of the pulley, in order to bring the wings into proper position for applying the rope guides to the pulley frame, or removing them therefrom. The position into which the rope guides must be swung preparatory to re moving the right hand rope guide, is indicated by dotted lines on Fig. 1, and just the reverse of this position would be necessary to remove the left hand rope guide. With the arms of the Ushaped rope guides arranged along and spaced from the outsides of the side plates 1, the rope guides may swing upon both sides of the sheave shaft 11 to accommodate the various positions of the rope 19 relative to the sheave, which would'not be possible were the arms of the rope guides arranged on the insides of the side plates 1, and further this construction allows an arrangement of the key-hole slots so that the rope guides must be swung into positions not ordinarily assumed in the usual operation of the sheave, in order to detach the same, so that accidental disengageme-nt of the rope guides from the side plates is rendered practically impossible. Owing to the fact that the rope guides are formed of heavy spring wire, it will be obvious that the arms thereof can be readily sprung apart a suflicient amount to disengage the fingers 16 from the key-hole slots, and the rope guides can be readily placed in position or removed therefrom, without the necessity of using any special tool.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y 1. The herein described pulley and rope guide, including a pulley frame formed with both of the U-shaped rope guides may swingupon both sides. of the sheave shaft to ac,- commodate the various positions of the rope relative to the sheave.
2. Thevherein described pulley and rope guide, including a pulley frame formed with spaced side plates, having correspond ingly arranged key-hole slots in the upper portions thereof, a sheave journaled between.
the side plates at a point below the key-hole slots, and a pair of U shaped guides embracing the pulley frame and each formed from a single length of spring wire, the arms of the side U-shaped rope guides being arranged along and spaced from the outsioes of the said side plates, and the lower ends of the rope guides being provided with laterally projecting guide eyes adapted to receive the rope, while the upper ends of the arms of the U-shaped guide members terminate in inwardly extending pivot fingers which have lateral wings at the extremities thereof, said pivot fingers being insertible through the key-hole slots when the lateral wings are in registry with the narrow ends of the slots, and the wings and slots having such a relation to each other that the rope guides must be swung into extreme posi tions, not ordinarily assumed in the usual operation of the pulley, for attaching to or detaching from the pulley frame.
