Description
UNITED STATES LEONARD W. KENNEDY, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN KEY-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 190,146, dated May 1, 1877; application filed February 10, 1877,
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, LEONARD W. KENNEDY, of Oakland, county of Alameda, and State of Oalifornia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in E scutcheons and Key- Fastenings; and I do hereby declare thatl the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had lto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, showing the keyfastener in place; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same with the key-fastener thrown open Fig. 3, a detached view of the key; and Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same.
This invention has relation to means for securely locking the key to prevent its being turned while in the lock, and also, in connection therewith, of ya covering-plate to cover the key-hole; and theinvention therefore consists in `the peculiar construction and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the eseutcheon, secured to the lockplate in the usual manner. The key-hole cover and clutch B is pivoted or screwed to the escutcheon A at a point under the keyhole. This cover .and clutch B is formed with an opening, a, for encircling -the shank D of the key E, and a square notch, b, for the re'- eeption of a shoulder, o, upon either side of said shank.
It is evident, however, that the notch b may be made on a diskn formed upon the shank of the key, instead of forming it upon the cover B, and said cover may be provided with a shoulder to engage with the notch.
The cover and clutch is also formed at its end with a curved edge, d, and a cam, e.
The locking-plate C is formed with a lever, f, for throwing the cover and clutch aside, said lever operating in connection with the cam e upon the cover B. The plate (l is formed with a suitable catch, g, by which it may be operated, and also has a shoulder, h, and stop '5.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the following description.
When the key E is turned so as to lock the door the cover B is swung around, so that the opening o!l will encircle the shank of the key, and the shoulder o thereon fit within the notch b, when the plate G is brought around in position, so that the shoulder l1l lits downv upon the curved seat d, and the stopt brought in contact with the outer edge of the cover, as illustrated in Fig. l. In this position the 'key is securely locked and the key-holecovered to prevent persons from looking through the same.
When it is desired to unlock the door, the cover B is thrown down by turning the plate C in the direction of the arrow until the lever f comes in contact with the cam e, which will force it aside, and the cover will then drop Vfrom its own weight.
Having now fully described m'y invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y The cover B, formed with opening a, notch b, curved seatd, and cam e, in combination with the plate C, formed with shoulder h, stop t', lever f, and the key E, with shoulders c, substantially as and for the purposeset forth.
LEONARD w. KENNEDY.
