' TOY Filed June 14, 1952 INVENTOR.
MTTORNEY. v
Patented Feb. 21, 1933 UNITED STATES RAYMOND c. DOLE, or ASHLEY, INDIANA TOY 7 Application filed June 14,
This invention relates to improvements in toys of the come-and-go ball type in which is incorporated means for producing a sound resembling a detonation. An object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive and easily manipulated toy capable of producing a loud report and which may be operated repeatedly.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing,
in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a structure in which the invention is embodied, portions thereof being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device, portions thereof being broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a detail side view of the valvular plug for the device shown partly in section.
The illustrative embodiment of the invention in a preferred form consists of an object of any suitable sort such as a ball 1 provided with a cylindrical socket 2, the axis of which passes through the center of the ball and one end of which opens through the exterior thereof.
A plug 3 shaped to snugly fit in the socket 2 is provided with an axial bore 4, and a cord 5 is strung through the bore of the plug and the end of the cord is knotted to form a valve 39 6 to prevent withdrawal of the cord from the plug and to completely close the adjacent end of the bore 4 when the cord is under tension. The bore 4 is sufficiently large as to permit free movement of the cord axially in the bore and allow passage of air therethrough when the valve is open. The opposite end of the cord preferably has attached thereto an elastic member 7 such as a common rubber band.
In using the toy, the plug is thrust into the bore 2 of the ball while the cord is slack and the valve therefore open. Air in the socket which is displaced upon insertion of the plug therein is expelled through the bore 4. The plug 3 is preferably formed of yielding material such as cork or rubber and is normally of larger diameter than the bore in the ball, and thus when the cork is positioned in the bore it is held frictionally in place therein. The plug is removed from the socket by 1932. Serial No. 617,081.
holding the ball in one hand and jerking the cord, whereupon, the "valve 6 is drawn against the inner end of the bore 4 of the plug which prevents entrance of air into the chamber while the plug is withdrawn from the socket by the force applied to the cord. The sudden removal of the plug while the valve is closed creates vacuum in the socket which is suddenly relieved upon complete removal of the plug accompanied by a loud report. The toy may also be manipulated by holding the free end of the cord and then throwing the ball with the plug in place so that when the slack of the cord is completely taken up by the travel of the ball, the plug becomes dislodged as in the former instance.
The elastic member 7 permits use of the toy as a come-and-go ball, in which event it is desirable to press the plug tightly in the socket so as to be not easily removed.
If desired a perforated disc 8 may be strung upon the cord 5 and posed thereon between the knot or valve 6 and the adjacent end of the plug to provide a more permanent seat for the valve.
I claim:
1. A toy consisting of an object having a socket closed at one end thereof and open at its opposite end, a plug having an axial bore and adapted to be frictionally held in said socket, a cord strung through the bore of the plug and having a valve at one end adapted to completely close the inner end of the bore when the cord is under tension, and an elastic member attached to the opposite end of the cord.
2. A toy consisting of a ball provided with a socket with an opening to the exterior thereof, a plug having a bore extending therethrough adapted to be inserted in said socket and close the opening thereof, and a cord strung through the bore of the plug and provided with a valve for closing the bore and causing removal of the plug when sudden tension is applied to the cord.
3. A toy consisting of a socketed ball, a valvular plug adapted to be frictionally held in the socket in the ball, and a cord operatively related with the plug and provided with a valve so arranged that when the plug is inserted in the socket and the cord is slack, the air dis laced by the plug upon insertion in the soc et is permitted to escape therefrom and entrance of air through the plug 5 into the socket is prevented durin withdragal of the plug by tension applie to the cor 4. A toy consisting of an object provided with asocket with an opening to'the exterior thereof, a plug adapted for insertion in said socket and provided with a cord to withdraw it from said socket, and a valve-controlled vent for said socket automatically closed. during withdrawal of the plug from said socket. a Y In testimony whereof I aflix m signature.
