1 Claim. (Cl. 273-493) This invention relates to a club for slinging or hurling a ball.

An object of the invention is to provide improved direction for the ball as it is catapulted from the head of a club, similar to a golf club; the head being of the type shown in applicants Patent No. 2,465,124 issued on March 22, 1949; the primary improvement residing in the arrangement of the receptacle or pocket inside of the golf club in such a way that the walls of the pocket and the direction and axis of the pocket or receptacle are generally parallel with the shank or the shaft of the club.

For the present this device is useful in practicing golf strokes so as to ascertain the correctness of the swing for a given direction, but it is understood that rules may be provided also for playing a game somewhat different than the present golf game.

I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the following specification, and as defined in the following claim; hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said device and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following detailed description, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for the illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:

Fig. 1 is a side view of a club provided with a head in accordance with my invention.

Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the head showing the head and shank of the club with a fragmental part of the shaft and Fig. 3 is a bottom plane view of the head of the club.

As described in my aforesaid patent, the general parts of the club include a head 1 on a shaft 2, and a grip 3 on the free end or handle of the shaft. In the head latented Oct. 14, 1958 1 is provided a pocket 4 in the form of a hole in which is held a golf ball 6 by a pivoted finger 7. The finger 7 is manipulated through a link 8 connected to a line or cord 11 which extends through the shaft 2.

The shaft 2 is secured in the usual manner into the,

shank 12 of the head 1. The finger 7 is pivoted on a pivot 13 in a cutaway portion or slot 14 extended from the pocket 4 into the heel of the club head 1.

The distinguishing feature of the present invention is that the pocket 4 is formed slanting on an axis 16 generally parallel with the shaft 2. The bottom end of the slot of the pocket 4 forms an opening 17 through which the ball is inserted and then ejected when released during a swing.

The top end of the pocket 4 is closed and it extends above the usual top level of the club head so that it forms a partially spherical seat 18 in which the ball 6 can be nested. This forms a bulge 19 on the top of the club head.

The side walls of the pocket 4 are parallel with the axis 16 and the shaft 2 and in the present instance are formed with a plurality of ribs 21 so spaced from one another and from the axis 16 as to conform to the outside diameter of the ball 6 and thereby positively guide the ball 6 in a direction parallel with the said axis 16 and with the shaft 2.

The manipulating link 8 is pivoted to the finger 7 spaced from the pivot 13 toward the ball 6 so that when the line 11 is released, the momentum of the ball 6 can push finger 7 out of the way, but other times the pull on the line 11 would hold the ball in position.

I claim:

In a club of the character described, the combination with a head, and a shaft whereby the club may be swung, a fixed holder pocket for a ball extended from the bottom toward the top of the club head on an axis generally parallel with the angle of the shaft, fixed walls in said pocket to guide said ball during its ejection on a path generally parallel with said shaft, and manipulable releasable means to retain said ball in the top of said pocket and to release it at will during the swinging of the club, and a generally semi-spherical seat formed in the top of the pocket for nesting saidball in concealed position, and fixed ribs on said Walls spaced to conform generally to the diameter of said ball and extending generally parallel with said shaft.
