The invention relates to iire extinguishers, especially of the grenade type. The object is to provide improved grenade holding means, detent means Jfor the holding means, means for locking the detent means, means for causing the release of the locking means and of the detent means, so that the holding means will discharge the grenade, and means acting vsimultaneously for breaking the grenade. Said locking and release causing mechanism and said breaking mechanism being normally restrained by fusible means adapted to become ineffective upon the occurrence of predetermined temperature.v

Fig. '7 is a horizontal section of the bracketl 0 tioned for the several pivot pins. After the several pivot pins are inserted, with the elements supported thereby, the outer portions 13 of the plate are bent back parallel with the marginal walls 11 of the channel 10, as shown in Fig. 5, thus serving to cover `the ends of the pivots and also maintaining the same in position.
lVithin the channel 10 of bracket 9 are pivotally mounted a number of elements. The loop element 14e has its free ends 15 perspective view ofthe fusible bent outwardly into line'with a common axis so that saidV ends may' tit in suitable holes in the 4Walls 11 of the bracket. The' loop element 16 has its free ends 17 similarly bent to iit in suitable holes formed in the side Walls of the yoke 18, and as these elements 14 and 1G are made of spring Wire their free ends may be pressed together for insertion or withdrawal with respect to their pivot holes. This arrangement makes it convenient to separate one or both of said elements from the braeketpfor packing. The loop or detent element 19 may be made of Wire having its free ends 2O similarly bent to form pivots for their respective holes in the side Walls 111 of the bracket. The- elements 18 and 21 are mounted on pivot'pins 22 and 23.1'espective-Y ly, having their -ends exten-ding through the side Walls 11 of the bracket 9. The outer Walls 13 of the bracket overhang the ends of- 70' these pins to cover same and prevent their displacement.
The yoke element 18 is provided With notches 24 for receiving portions of the loop element 16 and which cooperate'with the pivotal mounting of element 16 in said yoke for maintaining the element 16 in horizontal position when the yoke 18 is in latched relationship with detent 19. The yoke 18 is provided With shoulders 25, over which the detent 19 engages, When in normal latching position, With loop element 16 in horizontal position for supporting the grenade 26.
The element 21 which is mounted on the pivot pin n23 is provided with a notch V26 Within which the cross-bar of detent 19 alsoV rests when the parts are in the normal position as shown in Fig. 1. This element 21 is provided at its tree end with the Weighted head 27 and is connected, as at 28, with one end of a spring 29, the other end of said spring being connected to the bracket as at 30.
ldlhen the element 2 1`is brought into Vthe vertical position as shown in Fig. 1, the detent 19 falls over the shoulders 25 of yoke 18, and holds the yoke in such position. l/Vhenelement 21 is brought intosaid vertical position as shown in Fig. 1, against the tension of spring 29, it is held in such position against said tension, by means of a fusible restraining element 31, as shown in Fig. 1. This element is shown in detail in Fig. 6, and comprises two members provided at one end with the hook formations 32. At the other end, one member is provided with two inclined ngers 33, while the other member is provided with the inclined finger 34s adapted to project between the lingers 33. In this position the fingers are secured together by a fusible solder 35. This solder is associated with the upper sides of the fingers as well as with their adjacent edges, and is clearly visible, so that the condition of the fusible is always subject to inspection. The main bodies of the members are separated so as to straddle the arm of element 21 near the head 27, while the hook portions 32 engage the pivot pin 22.
In, opera-tion lVhen the parts are in position shown in Fig. 1, the ring or loop element 16 is held in horizontal grenade supporting position by means of its engagement with the yoke 18 both in the notches 24 and the pivot holes of the pivots 17. The yoke 18 is held in the position shown in Fig. 1 by the latch or detent 19 engaging over the shoulders 25 of the yoke. This detent 19 is locked in said. position against accidental disengagement from shoulders 25 by means of the notch 26 provided in element 21; this is to sali/f, the upper margin of the notch 26 positively prevents the movement of yoke 18 so long as element 21 is heldin the position shown in Fig. 1.
As above stated the element 21 is held in the vertical position shown in 'Fig'. 1, against the tension of spring 29 by the fusible device 31; which straddles the lower end of element 21 and has a hooked engagement with the pivot pin 22 which carries the yoke 18. The two parts of element 31 are normally held together by solder, or other heat affected means, applied to the cooperating fingers 33 and 34., as at 35.
`When this solder or other securing means is rendered ineffective by predetermined temperature conditions, the fingers 33 and 34 let -go and separate, so that the element 21 moves, in response to the power exerted by spring 29, toward and finally to the position shown in Fig. 4t. During this movement, the detent 19 is lifted out of engagement with shoulders 25 of yoke 18. The dotted lines in Fig. 4 indicate the original relative position of detent latch 19 and shoulders 25 of lthe yoke. Upon the disengagement of the latch or detent 19 from shoulders 25, the yoke and the ring element 16 will fall to position shown in Fig. a, thereby discharging the grenade. W ith the same movement of element 21, the head 27 is brought into violent striking contact with the lower side of the grenade to break or shatter the same.
Vlvhile the clement 16 will normally suiiiee to support the grenade, an additional element 1+i is shown engaging with the upper part of the grenade, preferably around the neck 38. This additional element is especially useful in cases where the bracket is subject to movement, as in marine use.

A pivotally supported element movable about a. horizontal aXis for releasably holding a grenade, a detent for normally restraining its pivotal movement, a detent actuator and means, for normally controlling the said actuator adapted, upon predetermined temperature conditions to release the actuator whereby the detent is operated to permit the holding element to discharge the grenades.

A pivotally supported element movable about a horizontal axis for releasably holding a grenade, a detent for normally restraining its pivotal movement, a detent actuator and lock, and means for normally controlling the said actuator' and lock adapted, upon lpredeetrmined tempera-ture conditions, to release the actuator and lock whereby the detent is operated to permit the holding element to discharge the grenade.

A pivotally supported element movable about a horizontal axis for releasably holding a grenade, a detent for normally restraining its pivotal movement, a detent actuator and grenade breaker, and means for normally controlling the said actuator and grenade breaker adapted, upon predetermined temperature conditions, to release the actuator and breaker whereby the detent is operated to permit the holding element to discharge the grenade and the breaker to become ell'ective.

A holder and a detent normally cooperating therewith to releasa-bly support a grenade, the detent movable to release the holder to release the grenade, a detent actuator and fusible means for normally controlling the actuator, said fusible means including cooperating elements having adjacent paris secured by a fusible solder so placed as to be clearly visible when the device is in operative position.
