' The invention relates to covers for baskets for shipping fruits, vegetables, and the like, and has for its principal object the rovision of a cover made up'of spaced strips of fibrous material and joined b spaced cleats having their ends connected by cross pieces to provide handles for moving the cover and to which are also secured securing means to secure the cover to the body of the basket. The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be shown in the accompanying drawing in which;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary side view of the basket showing the hinged side of the cover securing means,
Figure 4 is a sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 44 of Figure 2.
In the drawing similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts in all of the views.
The basket 1 shown in the drawingis of the tapering type that is ordinarily used for shipping vegetables, fruits, and the like, and constructed of spaced staves 2 and hoops 3. The lid or cover consists of a plurality of spaced strips 4 secured together by means of 3 cleats 5, that are spaced as shown and-are connected at their ends b means of U-shaped cross pieces 6 through 0 set ortions 7. The cross pieces 6 being spaced y the thickness of the cleats 5 from the upper side of the strips 4 provide handles for moving the lid or cover, and have also secured thereto members 8 forming a securing means that cooperate with means to be hereinafter referred to for holding the lid or cover in place on the basket. The lid or cover is also provided with a down-turned flange 9 that seats within the top of the basket when the lid or cover is in osition.

What is claimed is A shipping basket cover, comprising a plurality of fibrous strips arranged side by side, spaced cleats connecting said strips together, U-shaped cross pieces connecting the cleats adjacent to their ends, and securing means for said cover mounted on said cross pieces and adapted for connection with securing means on a basket, said cross pieces providing strengthening means for said cleats and also providing handles for moving the cover.
