Description
1933. v H. G. MUTSCHLER 1895933 FRAME Filed Nov. 16, 1931 INVENTOR (/T5C/IL ER A RNEY Patented Jan. 31, 1933 HENRY e. MUTSCHL'ER, 01? ROCHESTER, NEW.YRK
man:
A'pplicaclorl filed November 16, 1931. Serial N0. 575,291 n This invention"relat% t0 frames for interchangeable signs and has for its object to prov'icle such a frtune with means which permit signs to be quickly and easily inserted into the frame and removed from it'without disturbing the position f the frame.
Another 0bject of this invention is t0 provide a frame for advertising machines which is rigid, streng ancl rugged in construction and Will retain its shape indefinitely during all climatic changes.
These und other objects of this invention Will become more readily apparent from the detailed description which follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view 0f the frame.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the frame, the section being taken 011 the line 2w2w of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the frame, the section being taken 011 the line 3x*3w of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a, detail perspective view of a ortion of the corner of the frame and. one 0f the locking members with which the CO!- 11ers are fastened together.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of tw0 of the corners of the frame in a position ready t0 be brought together. y
In the several figures 0f the drawing like reference numerals indicate like parts.
The frame forming the subject matter 0f my present invention is especially adapted for use in aclvertising mach ines such as is illustrated in my application Serial N0. 547,- 664 filed June 29, 1931. In this advertising machine the signs are integral with the frame which surrounds them and in order to change the signs it is necessary to withdraw from the machine the signs with their frames and replace them with others. Furthermore the frames f'or the signs used in this und similar machines have heretofore been constructecl from wood which, when subjected t0 elimatic changes, warped, especially in the larger frames and interferred with the proper continuous operation of the advertising Inachine.
My present frame is formed up of sheet metal in such a manner that it forme a rigid,- strong and 1L1gged Support for the signs Which cannotwarp and gat 0ut of shape. As
illustratd in the severl figurs 0f the-drawing, the frame isiformed 1ip of the tw0 -side membets 1 and 2 an'd the tpp' "and bottom membrs 3 and 4 respectively. Eachof these 7 members is formed up from sheet mixterial in the form of a pair of parallelchannels and 6, ech havin'g an overhangingflatxige;7 Overhanging part 0f the open top of. the chzmn'el on the outside thereof. -The two parallel channels 5 und 6 have forme d be'tweenthem an inverted channel 8which provid-.es a combined sti'ffening rib and flange' for the middle 0f each of the members 'niaki1ig up the fraine'. This flange thus extends around the ir1side diameter ofthe frame and pr0vidies the backing against which the signs10 are held in place as willhereinafter be described. 5 The ends of the members m'atki'ng upfthe fr ame are an gula'r 'and when br0ughttogether f0rm' a miter joint bet'ween them. Each of these mitei joints is locked t0gether by a pa ir of angle brackets 11, 11, one-half of each ofwhich is inserted intothe channels 5 of one fiame member and the other half into the channel 5 0f the next frame membe1. In the same way the sjecond bracket' is inserted into the channel 6 0f these sinne frame inembers. The frame me'mbers are thus held in a reCtangular position with relation t0 eaCh other and in order to lock them togiather in this position each of' the locking brackets 11 has orie 'oi more holes 12, 12 provided in the side there of s'0 that the sides of theframe members may be indented at these' holesto haVe the inwardly projeqzting lugs formed by these indentations engage into the holes 12, 12
and thus lock the locking brackets t0 the frarne members an d tie the frame members together. 4 The'sign proper is removably held in place by means 0:E'the Wire locking member 13. This 111e1'11be1 is bent up in operi rectangular loop hav'ing its ends bent outwardly and pivoted at opp0site pointsin the overhanging flange 7 of the two side members 1 and 2 of the frame. In this way the locking member is adaPted to Swingin 100 theform Of an and out of the inside of the frame as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 2. The sign proper is made up of suitable sheet mater12il such as cardboard, sheet metal, etc. andwhen inserted its bottom edge is slipped behincl the hinged portion of the wire lockingLmember 13 and placed into the channel 5 or 6 of the bottom frame memberbetween the overhanging flange 7 thereof and the lange 8 as illustrated in Figure 2. After the bottom of the sign is th1'1s located, the remai11der of the sign is swung into the frame against the flange 8 of the side'and top franle inembers f and the w1relocking. member is swung in front 'of 111 t0 hold it i1i'pla'ce in the frame againstthese flanges; f
. The wire loeking mem'ber is provided with th'ebutwardly projecting lugs 14, 14, one intermediate#of eaCh side ofthe member and another intermedia te 0f the top thereof;
These lugs areadapted to engage into depressionsl5 formed 111 the overhanging flanges7 01E the frame members as illustrated 11 Figures 2 and 3..
1-ng ;member is either forced a'nd to p 0 f the w1re locking member will yield, allows the lugs 14, 14 to spring in and out of-the depressions'xl5 when the wire lockinto 01' pulled outof thefranie. I-Iowever, While the lockingmember is in the frame, 'tsecurely holds the-sign in plaee in tl1e frame. Y
' sheet metalinto -two parallel bers extending from eae 11els; inhone rai l to thecorresponding channels ili ;the adjaeent rail.
3;; Aimetal frame for signs comprising t0p, b.ot tom vamil side rails each formed upj from sheet metalinto two parallel channels with a vflange formed betwteen said channels and extending above'said channels, a miter jo'mt between adj acent rails, angular locking memof: the channels in one rai1 to tl1e corresponding channels in the adja'cent 'rail' a11dlocking means for locking said rai ls to saidlocking members.
4:. A met'al framie for ren1ovable signs comprisi'ng top, botto'm aml side rails each bent up fro1n sheet Inetal anal comprising a pair o f parallel channels W1bh a flange separating the channels and prqecting above the channe'ls an overhanging flange partially overhanging the outside 0f each of the channels', an inverred U-shaped locking member pivoted in the overhanging flange of two opposing rails and adapted t0 Swing in and out 0f-' said frame. v
5. A metal frame for removable signs comprising top, bottom and side rails each bent up from sheet metal and comprising a pa-irof. parallel channels with a flange separating the channels and projecting above the ehannels, an overhariging fiange partially overhanging the outside 0f each of the channels an inverted U-shaped locking member pivoted in the overhanging fls'mge f two opposing rails and adapted 130 swifig and projeeting outwardly thereof, gone of said overhanging flanges having a1depresjsion thereinadapted to receive said Lug of said locking member to=hold sai'c1 locking member in place within said frame.
The fach thao the sides in and gut of said frame a lag formed 111 sa1d swmgmg locklng member HENRY MUTSCHIQER.
