Description
R. ELWOOD.
ATTACHING CULTIVATOR SHOVELS No. 189,550. Patented April 17. 1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT Enron 4 REUBEN ELWOOD, OF SYGAMORE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING CULTIVA TOR-SHOVELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 189,550, dated April 17, 1877; application filed January 24, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, REUBEN ELWooD, of Sycamore, De Kalb county, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Attaching Cultivator-Shovels, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view, Fig. 2 an end view, Fig. 3 a cross-section, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal section, of the block.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for attaching cultivator or other shovels to their standards, so that they will have a free vertical and lateral adjustment; and its nature consists in a peculiar construction of the back block, to which the shovel-blade is attached, and in theapplication of a clamp and set-screw to a round standard, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A represents the back block; B, the clamp; O, a neck or enlargement of the clamp, furnishing sufficient metal for a strong screw-thread; D, the set-screw E, a section or part of the lower end of a cultivator or plow standard; a, rivet or bolt holes for attaching a shovel-blade b b, end holes, through which the standard E passes; c, openings in the sides of the block A, forming a space for the clamp to operate in.
The block A is made of ordinary cast-iron. The clamp B and set-screw D are made of malleable cast-iron. They may, however, be made of wrought-iron or other suitable material. The standards, as shown, are made of wrought-iron; but by making the holes b b and the clamp larger, or by enlarging the Whole device, wooden standards may be used. The clamp B is made somewhat oval in form, so as to give it more play, and to do away with any necessity for special fitting, as the size of the standards may vary considerably without interfering with the action of the clamp; and it is provided with a sufficient enlargement or neck, 0, in which to form a screw-thread long enough to give the screw D a firm support. The holes b are made so that their outer limit will be in line with the back plate, as shown in Fig. 4, so that a stronger clamp is furnished, and the liability of the set-screw to crush in the back plate is obviated.
Inuse a shovel is riveted or bolted onto the backing block A in the usual manner, and the holes a being outside of the clamping parts render the attachment of shovels easy and simple. Before riveting or bolting on the shovel the clamp B is placed in position by slipping it over the unbeaded end. It is then slipped over the end of a standard and fastened by tightening the set-screw. The holes b being larger than the standard the device can be freely moved up and down or turned around on the standard.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The block A, having its back extended around the standard, and fitting against the standard, where the pressure is applied, and provided with the end holes b and suitable rivet-holes, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the block A, constructed as described, with the clamp B and screw D, arranged to clamp the standard against the back of the block and support it under the set-screw, substantially as set forth.
REUBEN ELWOOD.
