Description

Jan. 24, 1933. R. DRUCKER REGIsTEgvoR INDEX Filed April 28, 1952 latented -J an. 24, 1933 UNITED STATES RUDOLF DRUCKER, F THE H vll'li. NETHERLANDS REGISTER 0R INDEX application led .April 28, 1932, Serial No. 608,048, and in the Netherlands April 28, 19,31.
The invention relates to a register or index which may be used for instance to note thereon the telephone numbers most often called by the user.
The invention consists in this that the separate sheets are piled on or against each other in a casing or upon a bottom plate and are covered by a tip-up cover, to which cover is connected an adjustable gripping member lo which dependent upon its position lifts a predetermined number of register-sheets when the cover is turned up.
According to the invention the gripping member is preferably constructed in such manner that it is pivotally connected to the cover and provided with a downwardly bent hook-shaped lip gripping around the outer edge of the register-sheets, while at this outer edge pieces have been cut from Ithe sheets, said pieces having for all the Sheets a diiferent width. uniformly decreasing according as the sheets are lying higher on the ile. p lf the gripping member is then further provided with an indicating device on the outer side of the cover, the user may adjust with one hand the gripping member on the desired sheet and simultaneously turn the 3@ cover so that he can read the register.
The register-sheets may be arranged in the casing in various ways. They may for 1nstance all be secured to a common pivotal rod, which embodiment will be useful in particular when the register is intended to be suspended.
According to the invention preferably the construction is used in which the registersheets lie loosely upon each other and each sheet at the side, about which it is turned up,
possesses over the full width a depressed portion fitting into a. corresponding recess in the bottom-plate. This construction, which in particular is suitable for a horizontal construction of the register, offers the advantage that each sheet may be easily taken out to write thereon. Due to the depressed portion of the sheet the edge, about which the sheet is tilted during lifting, lies underneath the point of engagement of the gripping member y so that tilting is readily effected and the sheet is moreover prevented from being shifted.
lFinally according to the invention the cover may be held in the yopen position by a stop, clamping means or otherwise in such a manner 'that also the lower side of the lowermost turned up sheet may be readily read.
in the accompanying drawing a register according to the invention is shown by way of example.-
Fig. 1 is a plan view in the closed position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section in the open position on the line TT-I in Fig. 3, some sheets being turned up.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4f is a detail.
The register is adapted to be used in horizontal position.
Tt comprises a bottom-plate 1 having two upstanding edges 2 between which the piled up register-sheets 3 iit with some play as in a casing. The bottom-plate is provided at one side with a depression 4 which portion is confined by an edge 5. The sheets fit with a correspondingportion 6 into this bottom-portion.
All the sheets together are covered by a cover 7 which is hinged by means of two side flaps 8 about pins 9 to the casing. In the open position the cover bears with its outer edge ppn an inclined edge l0 of the casing (see Underneath the cover a gripping arm 12 is hingedly secured thereto about a pin 11. This gripping arm is in the first place provided with a downwardly bent hook 13 and secondly with an upwardly bent pointer 14. This pointer cooperates during the movement ofthe gripping arm with a plate 15 on which the various characters of the alphabet are so grouped that, as indicated in Fig. l, two succeeding characters are located the one above the other. Thus two characters correspond with any pointer-position, e. g. the characters K and L. If the pointer is placed in that position then the gripping-arm withits hook 13 is just disposed so that in turning up the cover the sheet with the' character L at the upper side still remains horizontal, while all the sheets lying thereabove are turned up esl together with the cover. The back side of each sheet will now also be provided with a character; consequently in the position according to Figs. 2 and 3 the sheets having the character K at the back side (in Fig. 2 denoted by 16) and having the character L at the upper side (in Figs. 2 and 3 denoted by 17) are readable by the user.
In order that the various sheets may be lifted successively by means of the grippingarm the sheets have cut-away portions at the outermost short side. The width of said portions is different for each sheet so that projecting parts 18 differing mutually and being narrower according as the sheets lie lower on the pile, are left behind according to the position of the gripping-arm. i The pin 11 may be provided with two flat edges 19 kand the gripping-arm 12 with a slot 20 so that in a predetermined position of the arm, the latter may be pulled from the pin. The register may be used for various notes and as already remarked in horizontal, upright or suspended position.
The register may be manipulated by one hand only and permits of the reading of two sheets simultaneously.
I claim:
1. An index comprising a base, a plurality of index sheets swingably mounted on the base, a cover hingedly connected with' the base, and means carried by the cover and selectively engageable with a sheet for swinging the selected sheet with the cover.
2. An index as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sheet engaging means is selectively engageable with one sheet for lifting the same, or is engageable with a predetermined number ofsheets. i
3. An index comprising a base, a` plurality y of superposed index sheets swingably connected with the base, a cover hingedly connected with the base. a hook pivotally connected with the cover and movable to selectively engage the sheets to swing the same with the cover.
4. An index comprising a base` a plurality of index sheets having one of their ends pivotally connected with the base and their free ends provided with tabs, said tabs decreasing successively in size, a cover hingedly connected with the base, and means on and movable with the cover for selectively engaglng the tabs, whereby said sheets are selectively interlocked with the cover for swinging movement therewith.
5. An index as claimed in claim 1wherein the case and cover are provided with coacting edges for sustaining the cover in its open position.
6. An index as claimed in claim 3, wherein the cover is provided with a plate having indicia thereon, and a pointer movable with the hook and cooperative with the indicial for setting the pointer.
