RUDOLPHJ. LANGER, OF mon rrcnmo, IOWA, .AssreNoR T0 mm mmenmm v 00., or MONTICELLO, IOWA, A CORPORATION or IOWA FENCE ros'r BRAGE Application filed January 5, 1931. Serial No. 506,657.
onally or horizontally between fence posts.
The object of the invention is to provide a strong rigid brace which may be made from a minimum of metal, which will be efficient for its intended purpose, attractive in appearance and economical to manufacture.
' In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of two fence posts between which is a brace embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of one end of the brace.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of end for the brace.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to that embodiment of the in-.
vention shown in the drawing, the fence post brace is indicated as a whole at 10 and it comprises a single piece of metal bent longitudirially at'two places, 11 and 12, between its longitudinal edges 13 and 14, to form a substantially flat top surface 15 and depending sides 16 and 17.' The side walls 16 and 17 are slightly inclined outwardly as they extend downwardly from the edges of the top 15, then curved outwardly as indicated at 18 and 19, respectively, and then are turned inwardly at 20, 21 between the curved portions and the margins 13 and 14, respectively.
In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclu sive, at each end of the brace 10 the metal forming the sides is pressed toward the inner surface of the top 15 to form flat ends 22 which are bent so as to extend at an angle to the surface 15, and apertured for attachment by screw bolts 23 to the fence posts 24. As shown in Fig. 1, the member 10 is used as a diagonally extending brace between two fence posts but a plurality'of stretcher members 10 may be disposed horizontally to form cross bars for a fence.
In Figs. 4 and 5 isshown ,a modified form of end for the member 10. Instead of having the metal crushed together to form a flat end,
a limited extent near each end of'the brace 10, as ndicated at 25 in Fig. 5, and the post 24 FIC 5.0 the side walls are only pressed inwardly to iscut away at 26 to receive the end of the brace.
Changes may be made in details of con-V struction without departing from the scope I of my invention and I do not intend to be from the longitudinal edges of said top wall, said side Walls being curved outwardly and then inwardly ad aCent theirlower edges to provide strengthening means extending longituc linally of the brace, and the ends of the top and sides being portions.
fence post brace made of a metal strip, 7 comprising a longitudinally extending top wall and integral side walls depending from the longitudinal edges of said top. wall, said side walls being curved transversely adjacent their lower edges, the top andsides at the ends of the brace being flattenedandbent at an angle to the top to provide post attaching portions. V V
3. A'fence post brace comprising a strip of metal having a substantially fiat top wall and integral depending sides, said side members top, then curved outwardly adjacent the 7 bent into post attaching I u 1 I I being slightly inclined outwardly from said lower edges and the lower edges turned slightl}? inwardly toward each other to provide edge strengthening meansextending longitudinally of the brace, andpost attaching 1 means at the ends of the brace. v
4:.A "fence post brace comprising a strip of metal havlng a substantially flat top wall 5 and integral depending sides, said side membersbeing slightly inclined outwardly from said top, then curved and the lower edges turned slightly inwardly toward each other,
7 andflattenedend members extending at an 10 obtuse angle to the plane of the top surface of 'thebra de. 5 u .7
In testimony, that I claim the'foregoi g as my invention, I aflix my signature, this 31st day of-December, 1930. 15 w ii ,RUD'OLPH-J. LANGER.'
